January 6 committee seeks to hold Bannon in criminal contempt

The House select committee investigating the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol is searching for to carry former key Trump strategist Stephen Bannon in prison contempt for not complying with a subpoena, committee chair Bennie Thompson stated Thursday.

“The Choose Committee will use each device at its disposal to get the data it seeks, and witnesses who attempt to stonewall the Choose Committee won’t succeed,” Thompson stated in an announcement. “All witnesses are required to offer the data they possess so the Committee can get to the info.”

In a letter obtained by CBS News, Bannon’s lawyer stated that he’s not performing in “defiance” of the subpoena, and pointed to directions from former President Trump’s lawyer. “President Trump’s counsel acknowledged that they had been invoking government and different privileges and due to this fact directed us to not produce paperwork or give testimony which may reveal data President Trump’s counsel seeks to legally defend,” his lawyer stated.
