I’ve tried Walmart’s crazy new self-checkout machines — an add-on that stops theft, but I still hate the way goods are packaged

A WALMART shopper shared her experience with the retailer’s newly launched self-checkout kiosk.

The customer, known as Righteous Ray, revealed the new features will curb theft but admitted she’s not a big fan of the technology.

Shoplifting is a major problem for outlets like Walmart, and reports of self-checkout theft have become increasingly common in recent years.

In a TikTok clip, Ray revealed that customers are required to use handheld devices to scan their groceries one-by-one at the store in Dallas, Texas.

Unlike a conventional self-service checkout, the reader is not built into the machine.

The item and its cost then appear on a large screen before being placed in the packing area.

Ray explained that the screen shows an image of what is being scanned.

And she warned would-be shoplifters that if the tags on items are switched, the machine will spot it.

Ray revealed that there is a smaller screen that records the scanned items.

She didn’t seem to be a fan of the new technology being introduced at the store.

The buyer told viewers that she would continue to use the old kiosks.

She said: “It looks good, but I don’t like that you have to hold the scanner all the time.”

She suggested that robots scan and bag goods for shoppers, believing that this wouldn’t completely eradicate theft at Walmart stores.

Ray seemed angry that customers couldn’t pay for their groceries with Apple Pay.

Shoppers only have the option to pay for their purchase by card or cash.

The US Sun has reported how Walmart shoppers were caught after they allegedly failed to scan merchandise at the self-checkout.

Christine Louise Miller is accused of stealing $93 worth of items from a supercenter in Buffalo Ridge Plaza, Fla.

Officials with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office have claimed Miller scanned some items, but not all.

Last month, a man allegedly threatened a Walmart employee in Memphis, Tennessee, with a gun after they realized he hadn’t scanned all of his groceries.

The buyer, who is believed to be in his 20s, and his mother were approached by a loss prevention officer as they attempted to leave, Memphis police officers told WMC.

The employee revealed the man got angry and went to his car to get his gun before returning to the shop.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon warned shoplifting is “higher” than ever.

Speaking to CNBC in December, he addressed the issue, saying, “Unless this is corrected over time, prices will be higher and/or stores will close.”

According to the 2022 National Retail Security Survey, retailers lost around $100 billion to so-called shrinkage.

And companies like Walmart have taken action to combat shoplifting.

Some items were locked away in cupboards while others were kept behind Plexiglas.

Angry customers have claimed the promotion has made shopping “impossible”.

The goods are also protected by spun film, which is available in various shapes and sizes.

But retailers like Lowe’s have resorted to a more invisible strategy to combat shoplifting.
