I’ve been stuck in a tiny hotel room with my 4 kids for 2 WEEKS waiting for a meetinghouse – we can’t cook or wash

Stuck in a tiny hotel room while waiting for a meetinghouse, a FAMILY of five struggles to cook food and do their laundry.

Stephen Jones, 42, and his four children share the small space that will be made available to them for the next two weeks and hope Chelsea and Kensington can find a suitable home for them.

The father of four, who suffers from a personality disorder and mental health issues, had been staying in a hostel for people with complex needs, but a court order in June meant his children would be staying with him throughout the summer.

Stephen says his two eldest children sleep in beds, his six-year-old sleeps with him on the double bed and his youngest sleeps on an inflatable bed.

He said, “You’re getting restless now. At first it was like a little vacation, but now it’s up to them.

“It’s boiling and we can’t get out, it’s too hot. So they try to talk and I turn them away because the hotel is moaning at us about noise.”

Due to the limited facilities available, Stephen says it’s nearly impossible to get the day-to-day tasks done.

Cutlery and plates need to be cleaned in the bathroom sink, making mealtime a struggle.

Since there are no washing machines available, the worried father has agreed with his ex-wife to haul the family’s laundry to her house and wash it there.

He doesn’t look forward to carrying her dirty clothes around the city on public transport in the humidity.

Stephen’s family were first moved to a hotel in Fulham but were moved on August 8th.

He told MyLondon: “We couldn’t check in before three and had to check out from another at 12. [Chelsea and Kensington council] wouldn’t pay the extra £10 and they wouldn’t let me pay either [as his name wasn’t on the booking]. We had to wait in the foyer.

“The four-year-old just runs around. The 13-year-old is being screened for autism and he cannot sit still for long and the noise worries him.”

‘FRUSTRATING’

The doting father suffers from a personality disorder and psychological problems.

He is struggling with the wait times he is facing to get answers from the Council.

He said: “They don’t get back to me… it’s frustrating… when I email it gets frustrating.

“Okay, they’re busy. I just sit here and check my email all day because it’s getting more and more frustrating.”

Stephen says it’s important that he and the children stay in the same county where his support system is located.

He said: “Everything is in this district, all of my mental health is in this district.

“I’ve lived there since I was born. Everything is there. I know my way around there.”

A spokesman for Kensington and Chelsea Council said: “This is a unique situation and the Council has reacted quickly to a sudden change in circumstances to find a safe place to live for the affected family while we carry out a full assessment.

“Housing, particularly larger family homes, is very scarce across London and we feel this shortage particularly in Kensington and Chelsea, which is a small, densely populated and expensive borough.

“We are taking steps to improve the situation, including by building 600 new homes, at least half of which will be available at social rents, tackling cases of housing fraud and tackling the number of vacant properties.”
