New boss Ten Hag pointed to costly individual mistakes and warned fans there will be no quick fix for the team’s problems.

The Red Devils were booed at the break while there was more jeering towards the end despite an improved second half.

Ten Hag said: “It’s a hell of a job.

“This is definitely a setback. It’s a real disappointment and we have to deal with it.

“I’m not entirely satisfied because we’re losing and it’s not necessary. We should have done things better.

“We gave away two easy balls and the organization was a big mistake. We have made it clear how to deal with situations. It was unnecessary.

“We have to learn the lessons and learn from them quickly. We don’t have time and have to deliver.”

Ten Hag defended his decision not to start with Cristiano Ronaldo, who declared himself ready to start on the eve of the game.

The former Ajax manager chose debutant Christian Eriksen as the leader – with Anthony Martial injured.

United improved after Ronaldo was introduced in the 52nd minute and they pulled one back from an Alexis MacAllister own goal.

The United boss said: “Cristiano is now maybe ten days in team training and short for 90 minutes. You can’t force it.”

Maguire and new centre-back Lisandro Martinez had a difficult afternoon against former United man Danny Welbeck.

Maguire said: “It was a nightmare start to be 2-0 down at half-time.

“This is the worst possible start. It wasn’t good enough.

“This is definitely a setback. It’s a real disappointment and we have to deal with it.”

“We huffed and puffed and got one back – but it’s a bad start.

“The first goal threw us back a lot. You have a lot of control.”

United fans protested outside the stadium before kick-off with a huge banner that read: ‘Fight Greed, Fight For United, Fight Glazer.’

And frustrations spread in the stands as a fight broke out between United fans during the game.

Former United captain Roy Keane said: “There have been more protests – big problems at the club.

“It’s a really bad start. Ten Hag takes time and money. There are big problems up there.”

Club icon Gary Neville added: “Handing Ten Hag this squad to start the season was unacceptable. Reality has hit home.

“The time has come for the Glazer family to sell the football club.

“Manchester United is the easiest team to play against in the league. For that first goal, Fred and Scott chase McTominay back.

“How are you in this position? I was absolutely incredulous. You will be torn like a knife through butter.”

United legend Paul Scholes fumed: “McTominay running with the ball in attack when he’s got Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford in front is criminal.”

Seagulls boss Graham Potter followed that up with a historic win at Old Trafford after beating United 4-0 at the Amex in May.

He greeted Welbeck, who was doubtful for the game with an upset stomach.

Potter said: “He would have strapped the toilet to his butt to play, but it would have slowed him down. He was incredible.”
