TENNIS legend John McEnroe has slammed government rules designed to prevent Novak Djokovic from playing at this year’s US Open.
The seven-time Major winner, 63, had previously branded the ongoing drama surrounding the Serb’s Covid vaccination status as “ridiculous”.
Djokovic is not vaccinated against Covid-19 and government regulations are currently preventing unvaccinated travelers from entering the country.
As a result, the three-time US Open champion will miss the final Major of the year – despite being on the tournament’s entry list.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will soon be reviewing their guidelines on international travel, but any decision could come too late for the Serb.
And McEnroe has doubled down on his earlier comments, describing the situation as “BS [bulls***]”.
He told Fox Digital: “Well first of all I think it’s BS. That’s what I think.
“I think he should be allowed to play.
“My personal opinion, since I’ve been vaccinated, I’ve had a booster shot, that’s up to you”
Djokovic was infamously arrested by Australian Border Police earlier this year after attempting to play at the Aussie Open.
He had been granted a vaccination exemption to attend the Melbourne event, only for authorities to make a last-minute about-face.
Barring a similarly late U-turn from the US government, Djokovic will be forced to sit out the Flushing Meadows showpiece.
And McEnroe revealed he “does not agree” with the rules currently in place – especially as spectators have now returned to crowded sports arenas regardless of their vaccination status.
He continued: “It’s really unfortunate but those are the rules we really have with the government at the moment.
“I don’t agree with that, but for now it’s c’est la vie.
“It’s frustrating to see that we’re sitting here now and everyone is having a great time at an LAFC football game and that he’s not allowed into the country at the moment because he’s not vaccinated.
“If I were him and not him, he’s won a lot more majors than me, probably because he’s digging into his heels and finding the gear that very few people in any sport have ever found, so that’s part of.” he sticks to his guns for what made him great.
“He is perfectly entitled to make the decision [to not have a vaccine].”
Djokovic has not played since beating Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon final in London last month.
The US Tennis Federation has said it will comply with government vaccination regulations, meaning no player will be granted a waiver to enter the country and compete in the US Open.
Djokovic confirmed last month that he has no intention of getting a Covid-19 vaccine and will not attempt to enter the US if the rules remain as they are.
He said: “I will not go to America unless I have permission. The Australian saga was not at all pleasant for me.
“I have my stance and I am a proponent of freedom to choose what is best for you.
“I respect everything and everyone and I expect people to at least respect my decision.
“If I have permission, I’ll be there. If I don’t, I won’t be there – it’s not the end of the world.”
