INTERNET users complained about a shortage of tampons in May and June 2022.
However, experts have suggested possible reasons for what could be causing the bottlenecks.
Is there a tampon shortage?
The first week of June 2022 saw widespread tampon shortages, even prompting users to use the hashtag #tamponshortage on Twitter.
That shortage makes the problem worse for women, who have faced shortages after the Food and Drug Administration recognized widespread baby formula shortages.
“I thought I was going insane when I noticed empty shelves where tampons were supposed to be,” said one Twitter user said.
Another user specified: “Jokes aside… there is a tampon shortage because I have been to every single store near me and there are no tampons. Pads and menstrual cups only. wtf is really short of #tampons.”
What are people saying about the shortage?
Founder of I Support the Girls, a nonprofit group that provides bras and menstrual products to homeless and poor women, Dana Marlowe told CBS, “We’ve had requests for tampons, and our storage shelves are empty. This is us literally on crates versus pallets. It was very noticeable.”
Dana continued, “It’s so stigmatized in society, and neither does the majority of lawmakers have a period.
She concluded: “Periods don’t stop at pandemics. Just because there’s a shortage doesn’t mean your period will run out that month.”
A spokesman for CVS Health also stated, “If a local store is temporarily out of certain products, we work to restock those items as soon as possible.”
What is the cause of the shortage?
Bindiya Vakil, CEO of Resilinc, an AI-based supply chain data monitoring company, named TODAY the two likely causes of low supply on store shelves – supply chain issues and raw material shortages.
She explained in the interview: “Key materials used in production and packaging, such as plastic and paper, are severely restricted. In fact, paper shortages impact packaging in almost every industry. Feminine hygiene products seem to be the latest obvious casualty.”
She continued, “From being able to source the raw materials used in these products, then getting them to where they’re needed for production, and finally loading them onto trucks to get onto store shelves — every step of that process is done currently suspended. “
