This is the first year in the Post Office’s history that the lines will be closed on June 13, that is, on Sunday, June 19.

Who is the Postmaster General?

The post of General Manager of the Post Office was established in 1775 with the inventor, intellectual and Father Benjamin Franklin was the first to hold the position.

This position predates the country it serves – Franklin was named Postmaster General by the Continental Congress before Declaration of Independence even signed.

Over time, the authority and appointment process of the Postmaster General has evolved.

From 1829 to 1971, the President of the Post Office wielded considerable power and even had a position in the President’s Cabinet and was eighth in the line of succession.

In modern America, the Postmaster General is appointed by the Board of Governors, not the President, and does not operate at the cabinet level.

When is the first President’s Day?

George Washington, the nation’s first president, was born on February 11, 1731.

Presidents’ Day is celebrated on the third Monday of February, not Washington’s birthday, as a product of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971.

The act changed observations of Presidents Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day from hard days to picking Mondays to increase the number of three-day weekends.

The holiday was first considered Washington’s Birthday in 1879, 80 years after the first president died.

Countries across the country differ on their official strife for the holiday widely known as Presidents Day.
