WRESTLING fans were stunned by Vince McMahon’s short speech on SmackDown Friday night.
The 76-year-old WWE boss resigned from his position at the company after claiming he paid an ex-employee $3 million to keep quiet about an affair.
McMahon entered the Minnesota arena to deliver the keynote speech that fans had been waiting for.
He received a mixed reception in the arena as he stepped in to his signature performance song, “No Chance in Hell.”
In his role as “Mr. McMahon,” Vince was in the ring for less than two minutes delivering a short monologue to the fans.
He said: “As always, it is a privilege to stand before you tonight – the WWE Universe.
“And it’s a special privilege to be standing here in Minnesota.
“I’m here simply to remind you of the four words that are WWE signature – then, now, forever and most importantly together.”
“Welcome to SmackDown.”
He ended the speech by starting the microphone and stepping out of the ring.
Fans were immediately confused by the brief statement and took to social media to ask, “Is that it?”.
One said: “The shit was the point?”
Another added: “Well that was underwhelming”.
While one fan said: “Vince just said goodbye.”
And others were more direct, saying, “Vince McMahon fooled everyone with this promo. He was just trolling everyone who spoke about the incident.”
WWE released a statement on June 16 confirming McMahon had “voluntarily resigned from his responsibilities.”
It read: “WWE (NYSE: WWE) and the Board of Directors announced today that a special committee of the Board of Directors is conducting an investigation into the alleged misconduct of its Chairman and CEO Vincent McMahon and John Laurinaitis, Head of Talent Relations.
“And that, effective immediately, McMahon has voluntarily stepped down from his responsibilities as CEO and chairman of the board pending the completion of the investigation.
“McMahon will maintain his role and responsibilities regarding WWE’s creative content during this time and remains committed to collaborating on the ongoing review.”
