Rumor has it that Jon Batiste may be retiring from music this summer to focus on his wife, Suleika Jaouad.
The award-winning singer has opened up about his partner’s ongoing battle with cancer after she was diagnosed with leukemia for a second time in early 2022.
Is Jon Batiste taking the summer off?
Fans have speculated that Jon could be taking some time off during the busy summer months to get more updates on his wife’s health.
At the Time 100 Gala on June 8, he revealed why they decided to get married at the star’s home in February.
“The house was a kind of temple. It was truly a place we go to and fills our souls. We built something very, very special. It’s the combination of the two of us,” he told People.
“Our time there helped balance a lot. We got married in this house.”
Describing the intimate affair, he added: “It was just close family. It was one of those things that we did the day before her bone marrow transplant, it was a very deep time in our lives for so many reasons obviously.”
How is Jon Batiste’s wife Suleika Jaouad doing?
Giving an update on his wife’s health, he confirmed that his wife was “doing better” after a positive six-week stretch.
He told the outlet: “Every day we pray and continue that – I mean, she’s amazing. You wouldn’t believe she’s going through what she’s going through when you see her.”
“She has this ability to take the toughest of challenges and make them life-affirming. So it’s a special case for her. How she is is a matter for Suleika.”
Suleika was first diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 22, but has continued to have writing from The New York Times, Vogue, Glamour, NPR and Women’s Health alongside a string of successful memoirs.
The pair met as teenagers during band camp and have continued to praise each other through the odds.
During the Covid-19 quarantine in 2020, Jon said: “Obviously there are so many losses that we have faced individually and collectively, but I feel this time has also been a blessing as it gives us a break to be with one another to be .”
Will Jon Batiste return?
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his immediate future, Jon is reportedly still committed to a number of exciting projects.
Batiste tours regularly with his band Stay Human, appearing with them nightly as bandleader and musical director on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
He is now also music director of The Atlantic and creative director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem.
In May, he had to cancel a new show called American Symphony at New York’s Carnegie Hall after testing positive for coronavirus.
At the time, the Louisiana native said in a statement, “Thank you to all my supporters for their love and understanding. See you soon!”
