Originally, truck beds, such as pickup trucks, were created to carry cargo and other items.

In the United States, being in the back of a truck is legal in 20 states, while the remaining 30 have introduced some form of regulation of the practice.

Officials have warned that it could be dangerous for those in the back of the pickup because there are no safeguards for passengers.

Which states have laws banning traveling in truck beds?

These states have laws against this activity based on age restrictions:

  • Over 12 years old: Louisiana, Massachusetts and Tennessee
  • Over 14 years old: Kansas
  • Over 15 years old: South Carolina
  • 16+: Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Virginia
  • Over 18 years old: Florida, Georgia, Maine
  • Over 19: Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas

The following states have laws that prohibit riding in a truck bed under certain circumstances:

  • In work-related cases: Arkansas, District of Columbia, New Jersey, Utah and Wisconsin
  • If there is no space in the cabin: Hawaii
  • Depending on the length of the trip: New York

However, the state with the most leniency restrictions is Colorado. It allows anyone to sit on the truck bed as long as everyone in the bed is seated, the four corners of the truck bed are closed.

Is it safe to ride a sleeper truck?

Officials warn it’s not safe to ride in a sleeper truck.

Florida soldier Steve Montiero told WKMG-TV that the practice is dangerous.

“Think about it. There’s no seat belt, no actual seat, and in a crash you’re handling male materials,” he told the outlet.

He warned it “could lead to serious injury” and said “you should probably never consider doing that.”
