DON Lemon is a veteran reporter and has been a CNN anchor and correspondent for the past 16 years.
CNN has announced that the longtime presenter will be moving to a new show in the primetime slot.
Who is Don Lemon?
Don Lemon has been a successful presenter at CNN since 2006, but before that he worked for numerous news outlets and wrote several best-selling books.
Throughout his career, Lemon has covered the death of Osama Bin Laden, the Colorado Theater and Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, the Boston Marathon bombing, the trial of George Zimmerman, and countless other breaking stories.
He also hosted CNN’s coverage of the Japan earthquake and tsunami and reported for the media outlet’s documentary Race and Rage: The Beating of Rodney King.
However, his staff and viewers were most surprised when, during a CNN interview with young members of an Atlanta church whose pastor was accused of sexually assaulting some young men, Lemon was surprised.
Members told Lemon they didn’t believe the pastor, Bishop Eddie Long of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, was guilty because he didn’t appear to be an abuser or molester.
Lemon countered that abusers come in all shapes and sizes, and in an interview with NPR in 2011, Lemon said, “And I said the reason I know that is because I had an abuser as a kid.”
He told the outlet that everyone on set was completely silent, adding, “For someone who’s a host to say that on TV … I didn’t see the implications.”
His best-selling book, Transparent, delved into his past and revealed that he had been sexually assaulted by his mother’s boyfriend’s son.
He also used the book to announce that he is gay and said in the interview that May 16, 2011, the day the book came out, was the first day of his life.
“I want to go on trips. I want to do things with my boyfriend. I used to just isolate myself and work all the time. Now the job is … it’s not that important,” he said at the time.
He continued, “My relationships are more important. I’m better connected. i am happier Whatever happens to my career, I will definitely be successful.”
Lemon published two more books after Transparent. Released in 2019, The Hundred revealed what it was like for Lemon hitting bottom after the 2016 presidential election.
Lemon released This Is the Fire: What I Say to My Friends About Racism in 2021 and became an instant bestseller just a week after its release.
“I want to thank everyone who inspired me to write this book,” Lemon said in a video Posted on Twitter after his book topped the New York Times Best Seller list.
“All the people who bought it, all the support, and most importantly, the people who made the conversations I’m talking about in this book. It’s very, very important.”
A spokesman for publisher Little, Brown and Company told The Wrap, “As America’s only black prime-time anchor, Lemon and his daily monologues about racism and anti-racism, about the failures of the Trump administration and so many of our leaders, and about America’s systemic vulnerabilities speak for themselves his millions of fans.
“Now he shows us all how deep our problems lie and what we can do to solve them in a powerful, deeply personal, compelling plea.”
How long has Don Lemon been with CNN?
Don Lemon has been with CNN since 2006 and took on the role of 10 p.m. EST news anchor in 2014.
He was formerly the anchor of his self-proclaimed show CNN Tonight with Don Lemon during weekday prime time and still serves as a correspondent for all CNN/US programming.
Lemon has also co-hosted CNN’s New Year’s Eve special from New Orleans since 2014 with Brooke Baldwin.
In the course of his career he has received several awards for his journalistic reporting. In 2002, Lemon won the Edward R. Murrow Award for his coverage of the capture of the DC area sniper and other awards for coverage of Hurricane Katrina.
When Jeff Zucker resigned from his position as CNN President, Chris Licht stepped in to make major changes to the media office.
He was hired as CNN’s new boss in May 2022, and that month Lemon sent a memo to his colleagues telling them that “too many people have lost faith in the news media.”
The New York Post reported that Lemon said in the memo, “I think we can be a beacon when it comes to regaining that trust by being an organization that exemplifies the best qualities of journalism: fearlessly facing the truth.” the power to speak, to challenge, to question the status quo. Groupthink and enlightening viewers and readers with simple facts and insightful commentary, while always respecting different viewpoints.”
He added, “First and foremost, we should and will stand up for the truth.”
What’s Don Lemon’s new show?
CNN announced that Lemons will headline a new morning news show alongside Kaitlan Collins and Poppy Harlow.
Following the announcement, Lemon endorsed the move, saying in a statement: “The last eight years have been an incredible ride. I’ve had the opportunity to work with one of the best show teams in the business, but it’s time to shake things up.”
He continued, “I was honestly floored when Chris Licht asked me to do this and I’m honored that he believes in me.
“It will be a thrill to take on this challenge with Poppy and Kaitlan. I’m going to work with two of my dearest friends.
“Set your alarms, folks, because we’re going to have a lot of fun.”
The new show’s name and air date have not yet been released, but it will replace New Day, which is the lowest-ranked show on CNN, according to The New York Times.
New Day currently fills the 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. EST timeslot, but will be replaced later this year.
“There is no stronger combination of talent than Don, Poppy and Kaitlan to deliver on our promise of a groundbreaking morning news show,” Licht said in a press release.
He added: “They are all uniquely intelligent, reliable and persuasive; together they have a rare and tangible chemistry.”
In a memo to employees, Licht said, “We’ve spent a lot of time scouting for talent both inside and outside the network, and we ended up realizing that the very best trio is already here at CNN.”
