He placed second in the second season of American Idol.
As a child he sang in school and church choirs and was active in the local theatre.

He previously worked for the YMCA and is a Baptist.

He finished second behind Alabama-based singer Ruben Studdard.
At his audition, Aiken sang Heatwave’s “Always and Forever” before later wowing audiences in the competition with renditions of Elton John and Neil Sedaka hits.
Over 24 million votes were cast in the final, with Aiken losing by just 134,000 votes.
He returned to the series for a special appearance in season five and hosted season two of American Idol Rewind.
