The IRS has opened centers to help millions of Americans claim the child tax credit on their 2021 tax returns.
When changes come child tax creditthose who have not previously filed a tax return to receive payments will have to do so.
Previously, the maximum child tax credit was only available to taxpayers filing annual returns.
However, with the passage of President Joe Biden’s $1.9 million Covid relief bill, the payments have expanded.
As a result, up to $3,600 can currently be claimed for each child age 5 and younger, while children ages 6 to 17 can receive up to $3,000.
College-aged students 18 to 24 are eligible for a one-time payment of up to $500.
While many families began receiving the monthly child tax credit last July, some have yet to receive a dime.
The IRS has set up Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) to help qualified people get the money they owe.
The centers will be open on the second Saturday of every month from February to May.
Those dates are:
- February 12 from 9am – 4pm
- March 12 from 9am – 4pm
- April 9 from 9am – 4pm
- May 14 from 9am – 4pm
Hours may vary by location.
