After a sweltering summer, Britain is now suffering from a sudden cooling down.

Forecasters say temperatures will drop to as low as -4C on Halloween, with snow set to sweep across Britain next week.

Weather watchers say Friday will lead to a weekend of very unsettled weather as strong winds sweep across the country.

And freezing weather has always led to complaints from iPhone users that battery life isn’t worrisome – but you shouldn’t worry too much either.

It’s not unusual for this to happen. In fact, Apple even has a special support page dedicated to explaining the problem.

“Low or high temperature conditions can cause a device to change its behavior to regulate temperature,” the iPhone maker wrote.

“Using an iOS device in extreme cold outside of its operating range may temporarily reduce battery life.”

Apple adds that extreme cold “may cause the device to turn off”.

Why does cold weather affect phone battery?

It’s simple, really…

  • iPhone and other smartphones using lithium-ion batteries
  • These batteries contain an electrolyte liquid
  • If it’s too cold, this liquid can crystallize – like honey in a cold pantry
  • If this happens, electricity cannot flow through the battery properly
  • That means you can get significantly worse battery life
  • In some rare cases it may mean that your phone will turn off completely
  • Fortunately, your phone will work normally once you get somewhere warm

The support page continues: “Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to a higher ambient temperature”.

The good news is that the real problem isn’t cold weather – which only temporarily affects your iPhone – but rather hot weather: “Using an iOS device in extreme heat can shorten the life of your iPhone.” your battery life forever.”
