iPhone 16 rumours and release date: Everything we know so far

APPLE released its iPhone 15 just a few days ago, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from spreading theories about the next new device.

Let’s take a look at the iPhone 16 rumors so far, including long-awaited features and a release date.

One theory is that the iPhone 16 will bring Apple's first super-telephoto periscope, for significantly increased optical zoom

Bigger, better screen

According to multiple analysts and leaked designs, the ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro models are expected to have larger display sizes than the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 Pro models.

This could then reach the size of the standard iPhone 17, assuming there are no complaints from customers, MacRumours suggested.

New volume buttons

There were rumors that the iPhone 15 Pro models would feature a “buttonless” design – but nothing came of that.

Rumors now suggest that Apple is holding back this feature until 2024, when the iPhone 16 Pro models launch.

The device won’t be completely “buttonless,” but it will definitely feel that way.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it’s “likely” that Apple will use solid-state buttons for the iPhone 16 Pro – buttons that don’t physically move but vibrate slightly to mimic the feeling of pressing them down.

Faster WiFi speeds

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the iPhone 16 Pro models could adopt Wi-Fi 7 – the next generation of internet technology.

This means web browsing on the device will be up to 2.4 times faster than on the iPhone 15.

USB-C port

What we do know is that the iPhone 16 models will feature USB-C charging ports.

There has been a lot of talk about whether Apple would unveil the big change to the power ports in the iPhone 15 to comply with new EU standards.

After ditching the lighting cable on the iPhone 15, it seems certain that USB-C ports will be the standard from now on.

Higher quality camera

It’s hard to imagine how camera quality in iPhones can get much better, but it’s up to Apple to get it out of the bag before fall next year.

A theory that has emerged from China suggests that the iPhone 16 will bring Apple’s first super-telephoto periscope for dramatically increased optical zoom.

A rumor from Unknownz21 suggests Apple is testing a vertical camera arrangement for base models of the iPhone 16, something not seen since the iPhone 12.

Ultra model

While there was a lot of talk from industry insiders about an iPhone 15 Ultra model, Apple’s Wanderlust event proved that the rumors were just hot air.

Still, viewers have pushed back their expectations for a new, long-awaited Ultra model by a year to 2024.

Apple hopes to introduce an Ultra model in its iPhone 16 lineup, which, according to Bloomberg’s Gurman, will have the best of everything: camera configuration, display and perhaps even a better processor.

If dreams really do come true, it’s possible that the coveted periscope camera will be exclusive to the iPhone 16 Ultra.

Release date

Apple only just set the iPhone 15 launch date, so we won’t be getting an iPhone 16 release date any time soon.

Fall is the season of choice for the company, with enough summery shenanigans to break your old iPhone enough to make you think about buying a new one – and also tempt people before Christmas.

Typically, Apple leans toward the second Tuesday of September as its annual release date.

So we can expect the iPhone 16 – and a number of new products – to launch at that time.
