Today, both scientists and politicians are calling for the UK to introduce tighter travel restrictions.
The calls come amid an increase in cases of the Omicron mutant Covid variant.
Six cases of the Omicron variant have been identified in Scotland – bringing the UK’s total to nine.
Officials are doing their best to prevent the spread of the worrisome new variant, and the government has put ten countries back on the tourist red list, requiring all visitors from those countries to distance themselves. cups in a hotel
The new regulations, announced by Boris Johnson, also require all passengers arriving in the UK from anywhere abroad to take a PCR test by the end of their second day.
But there are calls for the government to go further from experts like Amitava Banerjee, Professor of Clinical Data Science at UCL and consultant cardiologist appearing on Good Morning Britain this morning.
He said we should put more border controls in place ‘sooner rather than late’ to limit the spread.
Professor Banerjee said: “I would like to emphasize that border control is part of what we need to do and it is best to give us time to test the transmission of this new virus, when it becomes available. More information.
“We know from previous waves that early action is when border control works, so that’s why I’m in favor of us doing it sooner rather than later.”
Scotland and Wales First Ministers Nicola Sturgeon and Mark Drakeford have called for more urgent measures to combat the spread of the new strain in England.
They are urging the Prime Minister to go further by forcing everyone to take a test for the eighth day, and isolating until negative results return.
Health Secretary Sajid Javid will today give a major update to MPs on Britain’s fight against the Omicron variant.
The Omircon variant was first reported in South Africa, but cases have been detected in countries around the world, including Australia, Germany, Israel and Hong Kong.
Ten countries in southern Africa have been added tourist red list to respond.
Unvaccinated Britons are no longer allowed to enter Spain and those who want to go to Switzerland must be isolated for 10 days upon arrival, as well as showing a negative Covid test.
Japan, Israel and Morocco have closed their borders to all foreign visitors, and Australia has delayed the opening of borders for two weeks.
