Walker had received offers and scholarships from a handful of schools, including Michigan State, Kentucky, and Syracuse, before he was even a senior in high school.

But his goal was to play football at the University of Michigan.

“The team, the coaching staff, just the way they did things,” ESPN’s Walker told Gene Wojciechowski via ESPN.

“I just love the way they carry themselves.”

Then, in late 2020, Walker was diagnosed with osteosarcoma after a tumor was discovered on his leg.

Walker underwent multiple surgeries as well as chemotherapy, reports CBS Sports.

The cancer returned in 2021 and doctors had to amputate his left leg.

The University of Michigan found out about Walker’s cancer battle and invited him to a football team practice in August.

On September 24, at the school’s home game against Maryland, Walker was honored by the team.

Michigan Football tweeted a tribute in memory of Walker.

“Our friend. Our brother. Our teammate. We are heartbroken to learn of the death of Dametrius Walker.

“Meechie has been an inspiration to every member of our program and to the Michigan family as a whole. He will be missed by so many.”

Several Michigan players who linked with Walker also shared their tributes, including punter Brad Robbins.

“The smiles and laughter that emanated from his welcome to our team was an experience that seemed timeless,” Robbins wrote.

“I wish we could all stay in these moments forever. I hope for everyone that we can celebrate his life and the positivity he brought to those around him.”

Walker’s high school also expressed their condolences.

“It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of Dametrius ‘Meechie’ Walker after a brave battle with osteosarcoma.
