And he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks just hours later in a stunning turn of events.
Kyrie has been one of the most experienced yet controversial players in the league over the past decade.
He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft and was named to the All-Star Game eight times.
Irving was part of the Cleveland Cavaliers team that won the 2016 NBA championship alongside LeBron James.

But he wanted to step out of James’ shadow and switched to the Boston Celtics the following year.
In early 2017, Irving caused a storm when he claimed in a mad conspiracy that the earth is flat.
He apologized the following year for spreading the wild theory.
Irving spent two years in Boston before departing as a free agent in the summer of 2019.
He joined the Brooklyn Nets to team up with Kevin Durant and create a super team capable of competing for NBA honors.
But his time in Brooklyn didn’t go according to plan with some notable high-profile controversies.
Initially, the point guard refused a vaccination against Covid and was banned from playing.
New York City issued a vaccination mandate, which meant Irving was not allowed to train or play in the city.
He returned on a part-time basis, only playing away games where the vaccine was not compulsory in the city.
Irving was fined $50,000 last year for allegedly pointing his middle finger at Boston Celtics fans while playing against his former team.
He pondered his future with the Brooklyn Nets this summer before finally going for it and signing his $37 million player option to remain there.
But Irving faced controversy again that season and he was suspended by the team.
The 30-year-old came under fire after sharing a link to an anti-Semitic film on his Twitter page.
He then refused to apologize for his actions, forcing the networks to take drastic action.
Irving later apologized for his comments and returned to the team.

The point guard has shown his dazzling performance again in recent weeks.
But he dropped another bombshell by demanding a trade and got his wish.
