Inside Alex Wagner’s marriage to Obama’s former White House cook Sam Kass when she is tapped to replace Rachel Maddow

JOURNALIST Alex Wagner will replace Rachel Maddow on MSNBC’s coveted 9 p.m. slot.

Wagner is best known for her work on CBS This Morning, but her marriage to former White House chef Sam Kass is attracting attention, with some calling them politics’ new “It couple.”

The show “The Rachel Maddow” has been a staple of MSNBC, with Maddow being the network’s most-watched star.

She will continue to host the show on Mondays and cover breaking news, while Wagner takes over Tuesday through Friday.

Wagner’s roots in politics run deep. She grew up surrounded by the political world while her father worked on Ted Kennedy’s 1980 presidential bid.

She began her career as a journalist for the music magazine Ray Gun in Los Angeles, but quickly realized that she belonged in politics. After changing gears, she joined George Clooney’s anti-genocide organization Not on Our Watch.

When asked about working with Wagner, Clooney told Vogue, “Whether we had to testify before the UN Security Council or we were stuck in a Land Rover on back roads in Chad for days, she was unflappable.”

In perfect political fashion, she even met now-husband Sam Kass at a White House Correspondents’ dinner party. Kass is also a household name in Washington as a fixture in the Obama administration.

Kass met the Obamas in Chicago when Barack was a young senator and Michelle was a vice president at the University of Chicago Medical Center. His presence became an integral part of their family and earned him a position in the White House.

Kass’s work in the Obama administration extended well beyond his duties as a private chef. He was a senior nutrition policy advisor, executive director of Michelle Obama’s campaign against childhood obesity, and a crucial component of the former first lady’s Let’s Move advocacy.

Kass is still active in spreading awareness about food policy. He appeared in a segment of Now This News last year on the urgency of fixing the world’s food systems.

After being introduced by MSNBC commentator Richard Wolffe, Kass was reportedly smitten.

They bonded over their love for the Washington Nationals, prompting Kass to persuade her boyfriend Edward Cohen, whose family is the Nationals’ major owner, to open up Nat’s Park for a private date.

The two married in August 2014. The Obamas were in attendance.

After they married, Kass decided to step down from his White House position to spend more time with Wagner.

He said in his farewell interview: “It was the greatest job of my life and I expect it will be the greatest job of my life. But I will be with my wife. Once you’re married, you kind of have to be that together.”

Wagner and Kass have two sons together, Cy and Rafael. Cy was born in July 2017 and Rafael in April 2019.

Not only has her accolades caught the attention of the public, but those who know her rave about her compatibility.

Vogue writer Jacob Weisberg observed, “It’s remarkable how they balance and reinforce each other.

She’s at the top and bursting with stories; he stays behind, ruggedly handsome, quick with a smile or laugh.”
