Innovative gift card program with bonuses aimed at supporting Newark businesses – CBS New York

NEWARK, NJ (CBSNewYork) – There’s a new way to support local businesses in Newark crushed by Coronavirus.

The gift card program is giving consumers extra cash to spend in the neighborhood.

As CBS2’s Natalie Duddridge reported Tuesday, at Green Chic Pea on Halsey Street, owner Martin Weber said customers often drop in for lunch during their workday. That all changed when people were forced to work from home.

“People used to stand outside in front of the store to get in,” Weber said. And now we hope the door will be opened. “We’re down almost 75-80%.”

Downstairs at the clothing store Brown Mill, the co-founders ventured and opened in Disease.

“At first, we were a bit hesitant. Many people have told us that this is the worst time to start a local business,” said co-founder Kwaku Agyemang.

“We were a bit nervous, but we’ve had a lot of support from our community,” added manager Elijah Pitt.

Both new and old businesses rely on that ongoing support to survive, but statistics now show a more than 60 percent drop in pedestrian traffic in downtown Newark, according to consulting firm HR&A Advisors. %, according to consulting firm HR&A Advisors, which used mobile phone data to generate the results.

To make up for lost sales, a nonprofit teamed up with a local company to create a gift card promotion that encourages people to shop locally.

“We were able to encourage people. You buy $25 gift card, you get 40% bonus… $25, get $10; 50 dollars, get 20 dollars; $100, get $40,” said Tamara Remedios of XPLRE Communications.

Remedios came up with an idea. She has partnered with Newark Alliance and Prudential Financial, which have given away $25,000 to make it happen.

“Businesses love it. It was an easy trade for them. There is no additional cost to them. You run it like a MasterCard card. No apps, no technology, no bills. They get paid after 24 hours,” said Remedios.

At Brown Mill, they say gift card programs shine a light on what’s already there, building community empowerment and cohesion.

So instead of ordering a t-shirt on Amazon, clothing company Brown Mill says it will make one in-store and customers will have a one-of-a-kind holiday gift. The store will help community members grow.

People can use the card at more than 85 businesses, and the card never expires – but the additional 40% bonus is only available for a limited time, through 2022.
