Craig Smith, who filmed it, said: “I saw a little girl with tears streaming down her face and fans coughing with nausea and a sore throat.”

He added, “Pepper spray in a crowded room like this among so many innocent fans was so unnecessary.”

“He started fighting after they moved in, but at least four police officers held him down and the chemical affected dozens of people.”

West Midlands Police said: “A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an English supporter and a police officer.

“Because of the aggressiveness, it was necessary to use Pava spray.

“We apologize if anyone in the immediate vicinity was affected.”
