“Scream” set Twitter on fire on the evening of January 6, 2022, and not necessarily for negative reasons. A good portion of those who watched it early on couldn’t help but express their appreciation for it.
Megan Navarro (@HauntedMeg) called the film “A razor-sharp, bloody introspection on the genre and Wes Craven’s legacy,” adding that it was full of emotion. Continuing Praise, Jon Negroni (@JonNegroni) called “a noisy, bloody niche at the movies” that targets everything from the film industry’s fascination with sequels to “malicious online fandoms. ” Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) respects “Scream” for its script and unpredictability, and states, “Fans of ‘Scream’ will love it.”
Nate Adams (@TheOnlyCritic) echoed the sentiment that “Scream” honors Wes Craven’s legacy and noted that it included some truly brutal deaths. Adams also feels that the legacy cast is a perfect match for “fresh meat”, and Jasmin Savoy Brown – who plays Mindy Meeks-Martin in the film – is the MVP. Meanwhile, Joel Meares (@joelmeares) believes that “Wes would be proud” and Perri Nemiroff (@PNemiroff) said it was “filled with love and reverence for the original and the fandom it amassed.”
On the other hand, some of the other early “Scream” viewers weren’t very enthusiastic about what they saw. For example, Ariel Fisher (@ Afis8) wrote, “It’s a bit too safe to be really great. The stakes and characters feel thin, and some weird decisions are made,” arguing that it missed some opportunities. The man in the movie MN (@joemnmovieman) gave an even more negative review, commenting on its “almost frenzied lack of self-discipline.” “It cut its own throat in obvious turns.”
“Scream” hits theaters on January 14, 2022.
