Team India batting coach Vikram Rathour did not agree with the view that Virat kohli should stop playing the expansion drives outside of the stump as it was getting him out too often. However, Rathour admits that the India captain needs to be cautious in his shot selection.
Kohli got rid of multiple flickers outside of a tree stump during her Experimental tour of England, several of them for delivery which he could easily leave alone. This pattern was repeated on the Centurion Test, with Kohli failing to serve off the tree while playing loose strokes in both halves.
Amid a fierce debate among cricket fans over whether Kohli needs to rein in his aggression until he finds his batting form again, Rathour says cutting those hits not a solution. Speaking at the conclusion of Wednesday’s game at Centurion, the batting coach chose:
“These are shots that give him (Kohli) a lot of runs and those are his scoring shots. He needs to play that shot and I think your strength is always your weakness. friend.”
The 52-year-old points out that if a hitter doesn’t play a certain stroke, he never leaves that shot. Trying to drive home, Rathour explained:
“You will also never score. Now, when to play that shot, that’s part of the discussion. Is it all right and at the right stage to play that shot? If we could tighten our game plan a little bit more, that would be better. So that’s the shot that he (Kohli) plays well and he needs to keep taking that shot but he needs to pick better balls. ”
Despite Kohli’s twin defeat in the Centurion Test, India still has the edge to lead 1-0 in a three-match series, weather permitting. Set 305, South Africa suffered from Stumps leading to 94 to 4 on day 4.
Deep Dasgupta rejects proposal to ask Kohli to stop playing drive
During a discussion on ESPNCricinfo, former goalkeeper Deep Dasgupta shared similar views with Rathour about Kohli’s repeated sacking regime. He explains that not playing the club is not a logical solution:
“If you start shooting away every time you start a particular shot, you won’t be left with any shots. The idea is not to leave it out, but obviously to get into the implementation side of things. I don’t think it’s a technical problem. It’s more about him being a little too nervous. We keep talking about him not getting a hundred since November 2019. I just have a feeling that he’s a bit too eager to get a hundred. In that eagerness, sometimes, the scene selection is not good.
