With a regular opener Rohit Sharma Injured, head coach of India Rahul Dravid revealed that KL Rahul was promoted to the top of the order so middle hitters received extended runs. However, none of them could make a difference as India was held to a 0-3 draw by South Africa in the ODI series.
Totally omitted Venkatesh Iyer for the ODI final created some vibrations in the Indian cricket brotherhood. But Rahul Dravid has rejected the ‘tight and change’ talks, saying he wants to hand the ropes as long as possible to the inexperienced people in charge of supervision in between.
“We try to keep them running for as long as possible, that’s the whole idea even on this trip. If you see, we didn’t really change the middle order, except that Surya got a game in the last game. But otherwise, we didn’t really change the order of the polish. So we definitely want to give them that consistency, that security, and obviously then you have to ask for the performances and the performances are really big.
“That’s the expectation when you play at this level, when you play for your country… The idea is to give as much stability as possible. Rohit wasn’t here, so it opened up the opportunity to let some of the others run a bit,” said Dravid during his post-series press conference.
In a rather forgettable tour, Rishabh Pant produced a few indelible performances. After the hundredth championship – 100 * 139 break – on the third test in Cape Town, he smashed a 71-85 tackle in the second ODI in Paarl for all but number one. 4 in the 50th mode.
Interestingly, he was promoted to a position in Pune last year after Shreyas Iyer shoulder injury. While the second is back on the side, the 24-year-old keeper-battler retains the all-important No 4 spot. When asked about Shreyas’s new role, Dravid said strikers in the forward position must meet the requirements of the team, especially in the face of stiff competition for batting positions.
“It’s not 4 and 5. Even if you’re playing at 4, 5 and 6, you have to do what the team asks. With slow catches and the ball moving, we certainly felt that left-wing strategy was a definite advantage. In all three games, he [Shreyas] go pretty early, he doesn’t need to go in and tagline.
“It’s not about individuals, we know the boys have done a great job, we want to support them as much as we can, we want to give them a chance. Sometimes you’ll have good travel, sometimes it won’t, it’s just that. Obviously there’s a lot of competition, there’s a lot of people pushing for the position, it’s not easy when you’re in that kind of situation,” Rahul Dravid said before a meeting. Sportskeeda query.
India tried four mid-ranked players in a three-match ODI series. Their aggregate in descending order is as follows: Rishabh Pant (101 runs from three innings), Shreyas Iyer (54 from three), Suryakumar Yadav (39 from one) and Venkatesh Iyer (24 from two).
“The obvious idea is to try and develop people like Venkatesh Iyer as sixth bowling choice” – Rahul Dravid
Seam-bowling all-rounder is a rarity in Indian cricket. With Hardik Pandya was treating a long-term back injury, the heavyweight role was given to Venkatesh Iyer. While he may have been faulted for his shoddy polishing efforts, his ramp-up deliveries have been put to malfeasance.
Reserve captain KL Rahul drew all innings for not using his sixth bowling option in the first ODI. Then, in the second rubber game, Venkatesh bowled five times excessively, conceding 28 times before being knocked out of the final game of the series. Interestingly, in his first series against New Zealand, the lanky player only lost in the final T20I.
Rahul Dravid said it was a three-horse race between Venkatesh, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja for 6th place in ODI. Acknowledging Venkatesh’s recent success during the opening, he added that there won’t be any vacancies in the top three once Rohit returns from injury.
“The obvious idea is to try and develop people like Venkatesh Iyer as the sixth bowling pick – whether it’s Venkatesh, whether it’s Hardik when he’s likely to come back. We have the option of even someone like Jadeja, a really good hitter, who we can beat 6 times by the time he comes back from injury. So that will also give us more options, so yeah, we’re looking at a lot of different things. When you’re the sixth pitcher on a team, it can sometimes happen that you’re not required to pitch.
“I know he hit the top of the order for KKR and sometimes for MP in whiteball cricket, although he also hit middle order for MP. On our team we’re looking for that kind of number 6, someone who could be the sixth bowling pick, that’s the kind of role we’re giving him here. Because we have quite a few options at the top of the order at the moment; especially when Rohit comes back, there aren’t too many positions in positions 1, 2 or 3,” added Dravid.
