“I tried [the Oculus] and was insanely blown away by how social it was,” said Marc Charlton, founder of Metaverse speed dating platform Dates VR, in an exclusive interview with The Sun.

Charlton became close with a meta-boyfriend and the two eventually met offline — and now they’re engaged.

It’s certainly one of the first encounters in the metaverse – but it won’t be the last.

“We need to help other people make wonderful, meaningful connections,” Charlton said, reflecting on the moment DatesVR was born.

DatesVR is powered by AltSpace, a Metaverse developer that hosts corporate events, digital trade shows, and more.

Avatars participating in DatesVR’s private speed dating events are placed on “islands” where questions are asked on metaverse screens.

Real photos submitted by users are posted on the islands, living up to DatesVR’s tagline: “Match-based dating events where you meet and see the person behind the avatar.”

DatesVR can also nudge parties who have common dating profile interests, belong to the same communities, or are geolocated together.

Meanwhile, others are touting the quality of interaction and the reduction in anxiety in the Metaverse.

It’s so much more immersive than, say, a text message or a Zoom call,” Chris Crew, CEO of Planet Theta, a VR dating experience.

According to the Crew, VR dates are like an “intermediary” to a traditional date, allowing users to better assess whether they want to meet someone face-to-face.

In VR, “you still get a lot of non-verbal cues, the body movement and voice inflection and timing,” Crew told The Sun.

Startups are racing to develop metaverse services at a rate not seen since the dot-com boom.

With the market for online dating apps estimated at $11 billion and growing, there’s no telling what Metaverse dating apps could be worth in the future.
