Despite Anthony’s confession, he received only five years of supervised probation for the deadly crime after calling for self-defense against Burt’s abuse.

In June 2019, Burt was fatally shot by his then just 17-year-old son in Louisiana, Yahoo! reports.

Anthony called 911 and told the operator, “I just killed my father. I shot him three times.”

The crime showed no signs of physical combat or self-defense.

At first, authorities feared that Anthony’s lack of remorse and emotion because of her expertise was a sign of sociopathy.

However, Anthony’s defense team, his stepmother and various other family members have urged that jail time is not necessary as the teenager was reportedly abused by his father for more than a decade.

Anthony’s mother held him for a time because of his father’s routine abuse, which allegedly included endless beatings and psychological and verbal abuse.

But Burt, who had already officially won custody of Anthony’s mother, kidnapped his own son.

His father is also said to have placed cameras throughout the house, leaving Anthony in constant fear of punishment.

In the documentary, Anthony’s stepmother, Susan, says she tried to teach him to read, write and basic math as early as age 10 and worries that an age-appropriate education in a public school is an opportunity that has passed, Esquire said.

Keeping Anthony away from school was reportedly an easy way for his father to ensure the abuse could continue unnoticed by the public.

By 2019, Susan had ended her relationship with Burt, leaving Anthony alone and particularly vulnerable to his father’s alleged paranoia, anger, and the guns he kept at home.

On June 3, Burt woke Anthony up after searching his phone and reportedly accused his son of still being in touch with Susan.

Anthony grabbed two guns that belonged to his father and shot him three times in the head.

While Anthony was initially charged with second-degree murder, he was later reduced to manslaughter.

In December 2019, Anthony was released on bail.

He also gained access to mental health professionals.

In March 2021, prosecutors and his defense settled on an involuntary manslaughter charge.

He is free for a five-year probationary period on the condition that he obtain his GED, seek counseling services, and either work or study full-time.

The offense can also be erased from his record if his actions are consistent with the legal requirements set out in his judgment.

Speaking to the Netflix show, Anthony said: “In prison you are deprived of your freedom.
