THE alleged murder of a Purdue University student by his roommate in their dorm shocked the nation on Wednesday.
Gji Min Sha, 22, has been arrested as a suspect in the mysterious death of his 20-year-old flatmate Varun Manish Chheda, which police are treating as a homicide.
Varun was stabbed to death in his dorm room at McCutcheon Hall in the West Lafayette, Indiana, according to police.
A preliminary autopsy by the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office revealed “multiple traumatic sharp injuries.”
Gji Min Sha was taken into custody after he called 911 just after midnight.
Police said the alleged murder appeared to be “baseless” and “senseless,” according to CBS News.
Varun from Indiana was a senior studying data science and was about a month short of his 21st birthday.
Gji Min Sha, originally from South Korea, is a junior with a focus on cybersecurity.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first murder on a college campus to shock the nation.
One of the most shocking college murders also occurred on the campus of Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne.
Lola Martinez, 22, was murdered in her dorm in 2008 by Tina Morris, the mother of her Tanzanian roommate.
Morris had been living in her daughter’s apartment on campus without a permit for about two weeks prior to the murder.
She told police she stabbed Martinez because the graphic design student was rude to her daughter.
Morris initially called for self-defense, but eventually confessed to the murder and pleaded guilty.
She was sentenced to 60 years in prison and is still serving her time at Rockville Correctional Facility in Rockville, Indiana.
Nick Armstrong, a freshman at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, died in 1999 after attending a party at Kappa Epsilon’s home.
The 21-year-old had joined the fraternity and fell asleep on a couch in the house after the bid night party.
While he was sleeping, former student Jeremiah Wilkerson, 21, hit Armstrong in the head with a baseball bat.
Wilkerson was reportedly upset that he had been asked to leave the party.
Wilkerson killed himself after police named him a suspect and he was never arrested for the murder.
The case of Virginia Tech grad Xin Yang is perhaps one of the most gruesome college murders of all time.
In 2009, the international student from China was beheaded with a kitchen knife at the Au Bon Pain restaurant in the university’s Graduate Life Center.
It happened just two weeks after her arrival in the country, as reported by CNN.
Yang had gone to the café to chat with fellow Chinese student Haiyang Zhu, a graduate student.
Zhu, then 26, pleaded guilty to murder. Detectives discovered that he had written a love letter to Yang before the murder, but she had let him know that she was engaged.
OMEGA CHI MURDERS
The massacre at the Omega Chi fraternity house on the Florida State University campus is one of the most famous crimes committed by notorious serial killer Ted Bundy.
On the night of January 15, 1978, Bundy entered the residence and began raping, beating, and murdering sisters of the sorority.
Margaret Bowman was found smothered in her bed wearing nylon tights. Her skull had been crushed by a truncheon used by Bundy.
Lisa Levy was also beaten to death and her nipple was nearly bitten off.
Cheryl Thomas, Karen Chandler, and Kathy Kleiner were also attacked that night but survived.
Bundy was arrested and executed shortly thereafter after being suspected of more than 30 murders.
