In the final days of Robert Hoagland before disappearing for 9 years when the missing father was found dead and living under a different name

HIS sudden disappearance caused a wave of confusion and concern among his wife and three adult sons.

Tragically, the 59-year-old, who had been living under a new name just 89 miles from his family home in Connecticut, was found dead.

Cops had been called to Rock Hill, New York, by his roommate, who said he was suffering from a medical emergency and identified him as Richard King.

But documents found by officers at the home suggested the deceased man was actually Hoagland.

The father of three was last seen on surveillance footage of gas stations on July 28, 2013.

He had failed to collect his wife from the airport the next day and his family alerted the police.

Police found he had left valuable items, including his wallet, cell phone and medication, at his home in Newtown, according to NewsTimes.

Nine years later, police said Wednesday they had found Hoagland.

They revealed his final days were spent “living under the radar”.

However, confusion remains as to how and why he disappeared in the first place.

“This is a big mystery,” said Undersheriff Eric Chaboty of the Sullivan County Chaboty Sheriff’s Office.

Hoagland was last photographed at 6:45 a.m. on the day he disappeared with a credit card at the gas station at 11 Church Road in Newton, Connecticut.

The card was never used again.

In a 2014 interview with The New Times, his family revealed that Hoagland had had breakfast with his son on the day of his disappearance.

He had mowed the grass and played games on his phone. Security footage at the gas station showed him smiling.

He even threw the clothes he wore in the garden in the wash.

But a conversation with his son Max would be the last time his family saw him.

REPORTED MISSING

When he didn’t show up to pick up his wife Lori from the airport the next day and she realized he hadn’t turned up for work, she reported him missing.

She said in 2014: “We remain adamant that he would never just walk away, but there is no proof either way.”

Without elaborating, she added that there had been “annoying things” for the family, “but not enough for him to just disappear.”

“We exhausted everything we could think of,” she added.

“Someone will accidentally find him, and I hope that’s sooner than later.”

“HE COULD BE ANYWHERE”

Law enforcement has noted that they previously received some leads as to Hoagland’s possible whereabouts, but nothing has ever emerged.

In December 2013, Newtown PD believed they were on their way to finding Hoagland in Los Angeles, California, per CBS News.

Then, in November 2014, according to The Newtown Bee, they suspected he might be working at a restaurant in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

However, that didn’t work either.

As one police lieutenant remarked, “He could literally be anywhere.”

In the years that followed, Hoagland’s case received significant media attention, even being featured in a 2016 discovery episode of Disappeared entitled “A Family Man,” per IMDb.

The 43-minute documentary features several interviews with Hoagland’s family and friends, focusing on an interaction he had days before his disappearance.

Hoagland allegedly met with some so-called “shady men” who one of his sons said stole the entire family’s computers.

DEAD FOUND

Police were initially unable to identify Hoagland when the body was found.

However, they were able to find documents with his name that led them to the widely publicized missing persons case.

Newtown Police Detective Liam Seabrook claimed Hoagland had been living under the name Richard King for years.

“Detectives learned that Robert Hoagland had been a resident of Sullivan County and was using the name Richard King since approximately November 2013,” Seabrook said in a statement.

Police said Hoagland’s death showed no signs of foul play, but his remains were taken to the coroner’s office for an autopsy.

Sullivan County law enforcement initially responded to a report of a man’s “early death” at a home in Rock Hill, but immediately contacted the Newton PD after finding documents with Hoagland’s name.

Seabrook stated that given the nature of Hoagland’s disappearance, they have no intention of releasing any further information.

“Police do not intend to release any further information as there was no criminal aspect to Robert Hoagland’s disappearance,” he said.

“The family asks that their privacy be respected at this difficult time,” Seabrook continued.
