A man accused of beheading his pregnant ex was “heard muttering to himself from behind a closed bathroom door as he cleaned up after the alleged murder,” his stepfather exclusively told The Sun.
Deundrea Holloway’s mum overheard him talking to himself around 2am and asked why he was using bleach – but he claimed it was dish soap, his stepfather Chris Hawk recalled.
Hawk said he wasn’t home, but Holloway’s parents didn’t know Liese Dodd was beheaded at the time or that his bloodied clothes were outside in their bin – and their son was the prime suspect.
“She said, ‘Why are you cleaning the floor of bleach? And I guess he said, ‘That’s not bleach, that’s dish soap.’ And she said, “No, it’s not. It’s Clorox bleach.”
“It was just kind of a conversation that wasn’t going anywhere, so she just thought he was being silly and went to work,” Hawk said.
Holloway, 22, struggled with serious mental health issues for at least three to four years, including hearing voices — one of which he named “Ruth” — Hawk said.
According to his stepfather, he came and left their home in Illinois. “He would usually come home, either to get his mail or when he was in a lot of pain.”
When asked if Hawk thought he killed Dodd at that point, he said: “It definitely happened. We didn’t know it, but in hindsight he did just that.
“He threw his clothes in the trash can in front of the house.
“And that that night, Thursday night, the police searched our house and took out the clothes, but there was nothing else relevant in the house.”
Dodd’s mother found her daughter’s remains at her home in Alton, Illinois on June 9, and her body was discovered in a nearby dumpster, police officers said.
Alton Police Chief Marcos Pulido told reporters that Noel wanted to check on Dodd when she found her remains.
He said she was “cruelly killed” and added it was “more than reprehensible”.
Cops revealed Dodd and Holloway, also 22, were on and off for about two years. It’s unclear who the father is, but a GOFundMe for Dodd indicated that her fiancé is the father.
Holloway was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and first-degree murder.
He was also charged with dismembering a human body, covering up a murder and a motor vehicle offence. Holloway is in jail on $2,000,000 bail.
Hawk spoke to The Sun for about 30 minutes and never shied away from taking responsibility, speaking out about his regrets and constantly apologizing to Dodd’s family.
But he wanted the public to know that he’s not the monster the police made him out to be.
He was a talented three-sport athlete in high school but dropped out two months before his senior year.
Not long after, he had a fight with someone over a marijuana deal that went bad and spiraled his life, Hawk said.
He had these voices in his head telling him things and making him paranoid.
They tried to get him help, but he refused and left a clinic about a year before his arrest.
Hawk said they’re “trying to get their son out of this” and have repeatedly apologized to Dodd and her family. He said they are ashamed of what happened.
“I don’t want to minimize their loss at all. I’m sorry. It is our son who is responsible for this. I don’t blame the system.
“I’m just saying that we can prevent something like this. If we can figure out how to do it, you know? But I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. He says I don’t have the words.
“I am ashamed. And I wish I could go back and try other tactics that we haven’t tried.”
