THE father of a 19-year-old has revealed his son’s last words before his death, which has a chilling connection to the George Floyd case.
The family of Anton Black, the teenager who died after being chased and held down by white police officers for more than six minutes in Maryland in 2018, speaks out again.
NBC Dateline will air a special this Friday with host Lester Holt that will cover a year-long investigation into everything that has happened since Black’s death, including interviews with parents Antone and Jenell.
Antone said he saw his son “begging for his life” and screaming for his mother as police officer Thomas Webster IV and off-duty officers Gary Manos and Dennis Lannon held the teenager on September 15, 2018.
“My son was George Floyd before George Floyd,” Antone told NBC Dateline.
Floyd died about two years after Anton in a strikingly similar incident when he was held down by a white police officer until he fell unconscious and unresponsive.
In each incident, police body cameras revealed that Floyd and Black both heard screams for their lives and their mothers in particular.
The news of Black’s death in 2018 and the way it happened shocked and even divided the Maryland community, according to Black family friend Christina Robinson.
Just two years later, Floyd’s death would effectively divide the nation.
Officer Derek Chauvin was later charged with Floyd’s murder, but Webster, Lannon and Manos were not charged in Black’s case, according to NPR.
The Black family filed a lawsuit in 2020 alleging officers Webster, Lannon and Manos used excessive force, The Baltimore Sun reported.
The three police officers countered with a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
However, in January 2022, US District Judge Catherine Blake refused to dismiss the Black family’s lawsuit.
The NBC Dateline special is expected to reveal more details about Black’s death and the events that followed.
The episode will be available to stream on Peacock starting Saturday.
