The siege of HMP Wakefield only ended when specially trained riot police hurled flashbang grenades into the cell to free Watkins from his captors.
It said he was in serious condition at Leeds General Infirmary and had undergone life-saving surgery following Saturday’s attack.
Dubbed the “Monster Mansion,” HMP Wakefield is home to 750 of the country’s most violent criminals — mostly sex offenders and serial killers.
Despicable clients include four-time murderer Robert Maudsley and Jeremy Bamber, who massacred three generations of his family in 1985.
West Yorkshire’s Category A men’s prison also houses Indonesian Reynhard Sinaga, considered Britain’s most prolific rapist.
He lured his victims to his Manchester flat, where he drugged and raped them before boasting about his sexual conquests on WhatsApp.
The doctoral student was sentenced to at least 30 years in prison in 2020 for sexually assaulting up to 200 men, later the sentence was increased to 40 years.
Each wing of the prison holds 160 inmates, with cells fitted with hard iron beds.
The prison was inspected in October and November 2022 and was rated “fair” in three out of four of its prison health criteria: Safety, Respect and Rehabilitation.
Wakefield only underperformed when it came to “purposeful activity,” such as having enough time outside of your cells to exercise, work, and study.
The report stated: “Some aspects of the prison’s infrastructure were showing their age, but in general the prison was clean and well-maintained…”
“And almost all the prisoners were housed in individual and well-equipped cells. An enduring strength of the prison has been the quality of staff-prisoner relationships.
“The staff at Wakefield were competent and confident, although many were relatively inexperienced.”
Mass murderer Harold Shipman spent his final days in prison.
The former GP was sentenced to life in prison in 2000 for killing 15 patients he cared for over a period of three decades by using lethal doses of drugs or prescribing abnormal amounts of drugs.
The monster, who hanged himself in 2004 at the age of 57, may have killed up to 250 people in his killing spree.
