In an 1890 gold rush photo, viewers wonder if a celebrity is a time traveler — but experts have a simple answer

OLD photos from the Gold Rush era have sent the internet into a frenzy as sleuths claim they’ve spotted a time-traveling celebrity.

1890 photograph shows three children operating machinery at a gold mine in Dominion Creek, Yukon Territory.

But keen-eyed viewers noticed that one of the girls in a braid eerily resembles climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Greta Thunberg losing hope of changing the way the contemporary world thinks about climate change, chooses to do so to travel back in time until it all started,” joked one Twitter user.

“This stuff on Greta Thunberg be time Traveler is ridiculous, there is no such thing time to travel. Obviously she’s just immortal,” another tweet said mockingly.

“Okay if Greta Thunberg know how time to travelthere would be no other way to change climate change,” mused another

The photo appears to have been taken in the Yukon Territory.

In 2019, the University of Washington, which owns the rights to the photo, confirmed in a blog post that the photo was not photoshopped with Thunberg’s face, as many suspected.

“Conspiracy theories aside, we’re pleased that the collection is receiving attention because it underscores the historical importance of the images, as well as the unique role that libraries and other archives play, not only in preserving, but also in telling those stories and ensuring the… Accessibility,” said Lisa Oberg, interim director for the UW Libraries Special Collections at the time.

They said the photo was taken by photographer Eric A. Hegg and is part of one of the largest Klondike-era documentary photo collections in the region, if not the country.

Known for photographing gold discoveries in the Yukon Territories, Hegg eventually opened studios in Alaska from 1897 to 1901, when this picture was taken.

Time Traveling Technology

Art fans were also stunned recently after seeing a woman holding an iPhone in a 150-year-old painting.

Online detectives and conspiracy theorists have held up the Ferdinand George Waldmüller painting as evidence of time travel.

But experts had a simple answer to the appearance of modern technology in the painting “The Expected One”.

They say the woman is reading a prayer book as she walks the countryside – instead of browsing social media

The man who first sparked the conspiracy, Peter Russell, told VICE the discussion shows how much society has changed over the years.

He explained: “What impresses me the most is how much a technological change has changed the interpretation of the painting and in some ways exploited its entire context.

“Today, no one can fail to see the resemblance to the scene of a teenage girl engrossed in social media on her smartphone.”

Celebrity Lookalikes Through Time

Greta isn’t the first famous face to appear in historical paintings and photographs.

Similarly, a few years ago, a Reddit user posted a photo of his great-great-grandfather, Dr. Andrew Sanders, an Alabama birder who appears to be a Matthew McConaughey look-alike, posted in a viral thread.

“I know in the Photoshop age it’s hard to believe this hasn’t been altered, but it really is a real original,” said Parker.

Actor Keanu Reeves has had so many look-alikes throughout history that fans have dedicated a website to them all: keanuisimmortal.com.

Dating back to King Charlemagne around AD 800, they include French actor Paul Mountet, who lived in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and an unknown 15th-century man.

Nicolas Cage has also been noted to reflect a Bristol, TN man who lived in the 1870s.
