A MOTHER faces court after killing her ex-boyfriend who she alleges molested her teenage daughter.
The opening statement for the murder trial of Wendy Howard of Tehachapi, California, is scheduled to begin Tuesday.
Howard told police she shot and killed her ex Kelly Rees Pitts, 57, on June 5, 2019 during an argument outside her Tehachapi home after she confronted him about allegedly molesting her teenage daughter.
She alleges Pitts ran an ATV over her foot and, fearing he would kill her, grabbed a gun and shot him multiple times, court records say.
Howard argues that she only shot him in self-defense.
If convicted, Howard faces a life sentence for first-degree murder.
Her daughter said that Pitts sexually abused her and that she was afraid to rehash her trauma in court.
She said, “I feel horrible and embarrassed to describe what happened in front of 12 random people, family, friends and supporters… I don’t want to remember it.”
She added that Pitts allegedly assaulted her mother on multiple occasions.
Wendy Howard’s defense committee has asked multiple times for the case to be dropped citing self-defense, KGET reported.
Courtney Morris, a member of Wendy Howard’s Defense Committee, has stated that Howard poses no threat to the public and is a good mother and grandmother.
Morris said, “Trying this case is extremely traumatizing for Wendy and her daughters, who are reliving incredibly painful experiences.”
Committee members are not legally permitted to have contact with the jury members of the trial.
Judge Charles R. Brehmer last week ordered Howard to comply with the gag order that prevents her, defense attorneys and the investigators involved from speaking out on her case.
A petition defending Howard has garnered 12,298 signatures out of a desired 15,000.
Her daughter started it all. It said: “Our mother is currently in custody on an alleged wrongful death. In truth, she was defending herself and her family against a man who abused us and others for many years.
“This man hit her with a metal baseball bat when she was pregnant with her daughter. The case was filed in Ventura County.
“This man sexually abused her teenage daughter. A complaint was filed with the Kern County Sheriff’s Department, but no charges were ever filed.
“This man has had multiple physical altercations with her underage sons. This man tried to rape her. This man has sexually assaulted his own birth daughter on multiple occasions.
“A report was filed with the Tehachapi Police Department and an inquest was being conducted at the time of his death.
“Our mother loves her life and her children with everything she is. She had no choice but to defend herself and her family from a man who had tried to kill her before.
“There’s no reason she should be charged with first-degree murder. It’s unfair.
