“I’m not in shape to play 90 minutes”

Chelsea focus back Thiago Silva recently talked about his relationship with the manager Thomas Tuchel. Silva believes both he and Tuchel understand what they need from each other on the pitch, setting the stage for a good bond.

Talking to Sports Illustrated, the Brazilian recalls Chelsea’s match against Liverpool, in which he played 90 minutes despite not being interested. Silva says:

“The relationship we have means we can talk freely with each other. We don’t hide everything and we speak clearly, just like we did before the Liverpool game.”

Thiago Silva, 37, has made more saves (55) and saved more shots (21) than any other Chelsea player in the Premier League this season. Another year for Benjamin Button. 💪

The 37-year-old added:

“I said I didn’t think I was in the form to play 90 minutes, I told Thomas, and even though I played 90 minutes, he knew if I felt something I would tell him, and He knows if I don’t play at Liverpool it’s because I feel good.”

Managing Silva’s minutes could be one of Tuchel’s top priorities. The veteran centre-back has once again become one of Chelsea’s best defenders this season and has made 22 appearances.

Silva has averaged almost 80 minutes per game so far, mainly due to his high form but also because of the Blues’ significant absences. The club have been devastated by injury and COVID-19 but are slowly bringing their players back.

This could see Tuchel rotate the Brazilian a bit more to keep him fresh as Chelsea are still active in four leagues.

The Blues will face Chesterfield in the FA Cup third round on Saturday. Tuchel’s men held a 2-0 advantage over Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final first leg of the EFL Carabao Cup. Chelsea, who are second in the race to the Premier League title, will also continue to defend the Champions League title against Lille in the round of 16.

Thiago Silva was huge for Chelsea

Signing Silva on a free transfer remains one of the wisest deals the Blues have made in recent times. The centre-back got off to a slow start but became irreplaceable in Frank Lampard’s Chelsea team. Silva has taken things up a notch under Tuchel.

Overall, the 37-year-old has made 56 appearances for the Premier League’s giants across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing two assists. Silva is an important part of jigsaw puzzles like Chelsea win the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup in 2021. He also recently signed a one-year extension with the club, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2023.

He will once again become important if Tuchel’s side retain the Champions League crown, while also adding the FA Cup and Carabao Cup to their cabinets this season. “I’m not in shape to play 90 minutes”
