I’m being kicked out of my house by my landlord… I’ll be dead in three days if I’m living on the streets – I’m scared

A REtiree fears she will become homeless within days after being evicted from her home by her private landlord.

Shirley Gray, 68, says she would “never survive on the streets” as she and her sister were evicted from their home within days.

The 68-year-old and her sister Carol Fowler, 59, were served with Section 21 eviction notices eight weeks ago when their private landlord decided to sell their home.

The couple, who have lived in the Stanley, Durham home for three years, have since been bidding desperately for properties in their area to avoid homelessness.

But despite her best efforts, her requests for a new home keep getting rejected, a struggle that has left Shirley “so desperate.”

And with their sacking expiring this weekend, the sisters and their dog, Ziggy, are desperate for a solution.

Shirley told Chronicle Live: “I’d be dead in three days if I ended up on the streets. I have COPD so there’s no way I can live outside.

“I’m so desperate, it’s awful, I can’t take it anymore.”

Shirley, who is in Band 2 for urgent housing needs, says she has placed about seven bids for a new property in the past two months.

But with every request that’s turned down, Shirley says she’s confused and distraught as she doesn’t get details on why her bids are failing.

She added: “I place bids but they just come back unsuccessfully but I’m not told why. There is no help.

“There are houses that I bid on weeks ago and didn’t have any success that are still empty. I just don’t understand how that works.”

Shirley, who works at a local nursing home, has been assigned a housing officer to help her find a property.

However, she said potential properties are always too far from her home in Stanley, Durham, leading her to turn them down as they would not meet her needs.

Not being able to drive, the retiree needs to live close by so she can be close to work at a nursing home.

Shirley also has to live close to her niece, who she has been caring for since her mother died in September.

Although she’s been offered several properties, she says they’re all well over an hour’s bus ride away and time is ticking now to find a new home before she’s left on the street.

She said: “They’re trying to get me to pull miles and miles out of the area.

“I was born here, I work here. I can’t move out of the area and I know properties sit vacant for weeks, but they don’t rent the properties.”

Lynn Hall, Durham County Council’s Strategic Manager for Housing, said: “As across the country, public housing is in high demand and bids are made on a prioritized basis, taking into account the waiting time for a property when deciding who will be successful in their bids .

“We work closely with Shirley and Carol and they have a housing officer to help them find new long-term accommodation.

“This officer will examine all options with you to find a suitable and affordable property as quickly as possible.

“One of those options is to search neighboring villages to find housing as quickly as possible, as broadening the geographic search increases the chances of success in accessing high-demand public housing.”
