I’m an expert on etiquette and these are 12 Eating Habits That Make You Mean

WE ALL know how important table manners are, but it seems that certain cooking habits are less favorable than others.

According to an expert, we should be careful about our eating habits as they can reveal a lot about our class.

German-born Detlev Piltz became fascinated with the English class system while staying with former Prime Minister Theresa May in 1961 at the age of 16.

He wrote “England – A Class of Its Own An Outsider’s View” and to this day maintains that there is a severe class divide in Britain.

What he calls “soft markings” separates the upper class from the lower class, and those markings are shown every time you sit down at the table, Piltz told the Daily Mail.

What’s in a name

Will you settle down for tea or dinner tonight? If it’s the prior, Piltz says you’re of a lower class.

Meanwhile, those who eat “dinner” at noon should call it lunch if you want higher status.

Your last course should never be anything other than pudding, so be careful not to call it sweet, after, or dessert.

When serving food, you should pay attention to your dishes because, according to Piltz, a square plate is preferred by the lower class and you should always opt for a round one.

While you might think that having a fancy fish or steak knife is necessary, it actually makes you look more ordinary and you should go for utility knives.

And far from dazzling guests, a swan-shaped napkin won’t hurt your social standing and you should opt for a plain folded napkin instead.

When it’s time for dinner, don’t be fooled into thinking that holding your knife like a pen will make you look fancy.

Instead, place the handle of your utensil in your palm.

Peas should be pushed onto the back of your fork rather than sitting in the dip, and you should tear up chunks of your bread to eat it piece by piece rather than slicing it up.

Serve the tea

Unsurprisingly, when it comes to tea, a loose-leaf pot is preferred to a tea bag in a cup.

And your milk should always be added to coffee or tea and not the other way around.
