I’m a Ukrainian refugee trying to find a host in the UK

A Ukrainian refugee trying to find a host in the UK has been bombarded with chilling messages from men.

Julia Skubenko, 30, wrote a desperate plea for Brits to provide safe haven, but instead received a series of shabby replies.

After the 30-year-old was forced to flee her beloved homeland from Russian troops, the 30-year-old turned to Facebook with her hopes for a fresh start.

Julia, who ran a successful cleaning business in Kyiv, wrote a poignant post that reached out to a crowd of 18,000 on the social media site.

Alongside a smile from herself, the businesswoman explained that she never expected “having to move to England”.

But the distraught Ukrainian admitted she now “has to start over”, assuring willing hosts that she would “get back on her feet” as soon as possible.

Julia, who had moved to the capital of her war-torn country from a poor village, included links to her social media profiles as well as her mobile phone number.

However, her heartfelt request was dashed by a string of single men who offered her a room – some asking her for “marriage”.

She told the Daily Mail she told a man she was only interested in houses with other women living there – when he made his ulterior motives worryingly clear.

Julia claims he replied, “Too bad, we could have started a family.”

Another opportunist boasted that he owned an oil company and a bank before offering to hire her as his “assistant.”

The 30-year-old says she struggles to believe the men are writing “out of compassion” and is worried Ukrainian women are being taken advantage of because they have no other choice.

Julia said: “I worry about the girls from my country.”

She has now found a kind-hearted host after wading through the influx of strange messages.

It comes amid fears that the UK government’s visa scheme could become “Tinder for sex traffickers”.

A senior council official revealed that more than a quarter of the 40 matches passed by the Home Office are between men over 50 and women in their 20s or early 30s.

“TINDER” FOR TRANSPORTERS

The whistleblower expressed concerns that a lack of safeguards could lead to a “massive case of abuse.”

Around 1,000 refugees are believed to have been brought together under the government-run complicated Homes for Ukraine scheme Michael Goves Leveling Up department.

But Labor’s Lisa Nandy, secretary of Shadow Leveling Up, slammed the system’s exploitative setup.

She said: “Michael Gove effectively created Tinder for refugees and asked desperate people to swipe right to find sanctuary.

“This is a serious humanitarian crisis, not online dating. The government should care about bringing people together.”

Charities say delays and piles of paperwork for Brits are playing straight into the hands of criminals.

Louise Calvey of Refugee Action said: “Problems with the program mean it risks being a Tinder for sex traffickers.

“We are already aware of people with illegal motives advertising on social media.”
