I’m a teacher – I decided to surprise my students’ moms with a cute Mother’s Day gift, but it was a TOTAL fail

ANYONE who works in childcare or education knows how difficult it is to come up with new, creative ideas for Mother’s Day surprises.

Determined to think outside the box and not make yet another card or macaroni necklace, one teacher turned to TikTok for inspiration — but things didn’t quite go to plan.

According to Gina, she had followed all the instructions to the letter

Gina Mara from California was browsing social media when she came across a nifty DIY hack she thought would be perfect for her first graders – shrink tags.

As demonstrated by another TikTok user, Just Hearsing Around (@justhearsingaround), the craft was meant to be relatively easy and only required two ingredients – a sheet of plastic wrap (she used the bottom of a clear container) and some acrylic paint.

According to Just Hearsing Around, all you have to do is apply some acrylic paint to a child’s hand and press the sheet to cut it around and bake the handprints in the oven at 160C for five minutes.

But while for the mum the charms came out adorable, Gina’s attempt didn’t go down so well as she took him to TikTok to share the huge failure.

At the start of the viral DIY blunder – it was viewed nearly 712,000 times on social media – the teacher shared footage of the process as a colleague applied a thin coat of pink paint to a student’s palm.

Covered in blue and pink handprints, Gina and her colleagues had made a total of 21 shrink tags that could be popped into the oven once fully dried.

“The kids were so excited!” the teacher wrote.

However, despite the hard work, the DIY craft turned out to be a huge failure as the heat curled the plastic into odd shapes.

“Now, how do I explain this crap to you?” Gina was offended.

While she claimed to have followed the instructions step-by-step, viewers were convinced she must have made a mistake at some point.

“You didn’t cook them long enough. I hate when people complain when it’s their own fault,” commented one critical user.

Another agreed, wondering, “Question… why wouldn’t you experiment first before jumping into a whole class that has no experience of how to make them?”

A less brusque person tried to share a solution: “Just tell them you have to do it again to make it work like it’s part of the steps, they won’t know. then repeat and cook longer [sic].”

Someone else seemed to have an issue with the choice of colors Gina chose for the craft: “Bruh why don’t blue and pink teach her like that” – a comment liked by nearly 1,400 other viewers.

Despite the failure, Gina hasn’t stopped trying different tricks – she made stunning DIY decorations out of plastic cups for Christmas.

This was a win and a favorite for many.
