WIN BIG on scratch cards is meant to be a gamble.
Players choose random cards and everyone has an equal chance of hitting the jackpot.
However, according to a lottery expert, there might be a way to predict the numbers hidden on the ticket.
In 2003, Mohan Srivastava noticed that certain scratch cards might have an error when analyzing their layout.
He developed the singleton method, which looked for the individual numbers on visible digits on the face of a ticket.
Statistician Srivastava found that once a visible number appeared, it was also below the scratch area.
By plotting the numbers and finding three singletons in a row, players could theoretically see where the winners are.
Srivastava told ABC in 2011: “The tickets are clearly mass-produced, which means there has to be a computer program that determines the numbers.
“Of course it would be really nice if the computer could just spit out random numbers.
“But that is not possible because the lottery company has to control the number of winning tickets.
“The game cannot be truly random. Instead, it must create the illusion of randomness while actually being carefully designed.”
It’s unclear how many more tickets might come into conflict using this method, but casino.org noted that in 2020 many had taken steps to redesign their cards.
They said in a blog post: “Most scratch card manufacturers have embraced this strategy and a large number of them are now designing their scratch cards to fight it.
“But there are still a few who haven’t taken steps to address it.
“You can use it for the kind of scratch cards where numbers are visible on the page, so it’s a method that’s still worth pursuing.”
On Tuesday, The Sun reported a list of the best ways to secure a win playing the lottery.
Experts say that buying the cards that are slightly more expensive means bigger prices.
“You’d be better off buying higher-priced scratch cards, but less,” the blog adds.
“Quality over quantity is very true when it comes to scratch cards.”
Other tactics include checking the fine print for odds, buying more than one ticket at a time rather than multiple tickets if you can afford it, and looking out for games and stores that haven’t had a profit in a long time.
The blog likens this tactic to “slot players loitering around machines to wait until players have a losing streak or a number of players don’t hit a jackpot prize.”
“The long drought may mean the slot machine is about to hit,” they add.
Players should also keep their old games and submit all cards for review in case they missed a win.
“You never know, you might spot a bug later,” the blog adds.
“You can only be absolutely sure if you have your lot officially inspected.”
Studying the cards can also uncover clues and claims from casino.org and stick with a game.
As always with any game of chance, only spend what you can afford to lose and be strict with your spending, they realize.
The blog adds, “Set a weekly or monthly budget and stick to it lest your finances spiral out of control.”
Lottery fanatic and TikToker “Videovixs” recently revealed in a video a strategy that helped her win twice with four scratch cards.
And gambler William Newell got really lucky last October and got Lady Luck to deliver him $100,000 in lottery winnings.
His formula for success?
Alexandria, Virginia resident bought 20 identical lottery tickets online that had the same winning combination of numbers – and it paid off.
A lottery expert naming Billy John on TikTok has laid out some things to avoid the next time you buy a lottery ticket.
Also, another lottery expert shows how you can mathematically improve your chances of winning.
And another, who calls himself Richard Wheeler, believes players can improve their odds by picking big numbers.
