Whether you call them Spanx or trousers, shapewear can bring out the best in your figure.
Stylist Abby McHale and lingerie expert Soozie Jenkinson reveal the mistakes to avoid when you’re shopping.
Bought size too small
LINGERIE expert Soozie, Head of Design at M&S, says: “There is a perception that buying a shapewear in a smaller size will make it work more, keep everything in place and create the look slimmer outside.
“But that’s not the case and not only is this squeezing, pinching and bulging which is really uncomfortable.
“For shapewear, you buy your exact dress size, and if you want a tight fit or like to slip, you can wear your own bra to adjust the entire garment to fit. your unique shape and size.”
Forget about VPL
THINK about what you will wear on your shapewear.
If it’s a thinner fabric above, then you may need a pair of tights instead of shorts to avoid creating lines where the shorts stop in the middle of your thighs.
“Consider the fabrics you plan to wear,” says Soozie.
“Pull skirts are on-trend and you should wear a thin pair of panties underneath, which will make your dress glide over the top.”
Bring too many things
It’s easy to go to the stores and think you need a body, a pair of shorts, high-waisted shorts, and tights to put on that Christmas party dress, but mixing in too many forms doesn’t work. That’s not always the answer – your skin has to escape a few places.
“Think about what you want out of your form,” says Soozie, and determine what kind of support and look you want to achieve before going to the store.
Do not consider the occasion
It’s party season, so of course we want to look good but still feel comfortable – right down to our underwear.
Not thinking about how you’ll be sitting, standing, or dancing, or how warm the room is, can leave you reeling from your Spanx.
Look for breathable fabrics or cooling technology.
Our coupons at M&S also feature Cool Comfort technology so you can stay cool and comfortable all night long, says Soozie.
Don’t know your body
NO two bodies are alike, so not everyone needs the same shapewear.
“Having an idea of what kind of support you want will help narrow down the options that are best,” says Soozie. Don’t forget to shape the stockings too.
“These give smoothness to the entire foot and, paired with a non-VPL panty underneath, can provide a streamlined look.
“Waist-shaping panties can help create an hourglass figure under the bodycon.”
Choose the wrong color
As well as highlighting your body, your silhouette also needs to be hidden, so it’s important that you choose the right color.
“Pick a soothing neutral for your lingerie, rather than white or cream,” says Soozie.
“This means it will disappear under your dress.”
No test run
There’s nothing worse than going out in your new shapewear only to find it tacky, chipped, or uncomfortable as you initially thought it would be.
“If you are shopping with a particular outfit, I always recommend bringing it and trying it all on together, making sure there are no visible lines and that you feel supported,” says Soozie. in all suitable places.
“Also, make time for another workout. That might seem obvious, but always try on your clothes and outfits together before the big event.”
