Mariu Cabral, a nutritionist with the username @mariucabral.ntp on TikTok, recently posted a video detailing the four nutritious foods you can buy at Trader Joe’s that will still save you some money.

chicken thighs

Mariu’s first nutritious product to save you money at Trader Joe’s is chicken thighs.

“I prefer to eat chicken thighs because they are tastier, and it’s usually better for you if the chicken has more fat,” explains Mariu.

Mariu notes that you shouldn’t just reach for the thighs for the healthy fats, but because they’re often a lot cheaper than chicken breasts.

Frozen Fish

Next on Mariu’s list of affordable and nutritious picks is Trader Joe’s frozen fish range.

“In the fish department, anything that’s frozen is really a really good option,” says Mariu.

The frozen cod and wild salmon options are often options that Mariu says she reaches for as they’re healthy and relatively cheap compared to other fish in the freezer.

Olive tapenade

In addition to main courses like fish and chicken, Mariu also recommends an inexpensive and nutritious olive tapenade spread.

“And then if you want a little spread or something really healthy, this olive tapenade is really good,” explains Mariu.

“It has very clean ingredients, it’s just olives with some tomato paste and stuff like that.”

It pairs really well with crackers or bread and is another option that won’t break the bank when shopping for other items at Trader Joe’s.

Canned tomatoes

The last recommendation Mariu gives to Trader Joe shoppers looking for healthy and affordable options is canned tomatoes.

The canned tomatoes at Trader Joe’s have healthier ingredients than most red pasta sauces, according to the nutritionist.

They also lack a certain ingredient that Mariu tries to avoid in Trader Joe’s sauces and dips.

Avoid sunflower oil

“When it comes to dips, hummus, salsas, and so on, I don’t like buying them at Trader Joe’s because most of them contain sunflower oil or canola oil,” says Mariu.

According to reports from Healthline, sunflower oil has been reported to do more harm than good to your health.

Because of this, Mariu finds that making your own sauces, salsas, hummus, and other dips from raw ingredients are better options.

Not to mention that buying Trader Joe’s dips would probably cost you more money than making them yourself.
