Luckily, author and philanthropist Jandra Sutton spoke to Metro and shared her unique tips and tricks to make your life just that little bit easier.

She notes that she’s tried various decluttering techniques over the years — including Marie Kondo’s “KonMari” method, which is based on a simple principle — if it’s not “joyful,” then let it be.

But Jandra warns that while the concept seems simple enough, it’s not always quite that simple.

She further notes that Marie Kondo’s world-renowned tidying and tidying system helped her toss out sentimental items that she no longer enjoyed.

However, she still struggled to rid her house of things she thought she would one day use or wear.

Then she came up with an ingenious solution.

“However, instead of forcing me to get rid of these items, someone suggested I include a third category in my closet cleaning: items I wanted to keep, items I would donate or throw away, and items I would hide,” she explained .

“…If there are certain items you don’t want to throw away – because you might need them one day, you feel guilty about getting rid of something you don’t use, or you just don’t know if you like it or not – allow yourself a “middle step” between keeping and throwing away.”

She went on to note the benefits of her technique, claiming that it helps create a mental space between items you’re not sure you want to get rid of.

Speaking from personal experience, Jandra claims that this makes it easier to let her go when the time finally comes.

She concludes that if she hasn’t worn or used the item before the next decluttering session, it’s easier for her to throw it away.
