NO one understands the dangers of fame better than a Hollywood star – or perhaps more precisely, their chief of security.
Over the years, celebrity bodyguard Simon Newton has protected some of the most famous people in the world – including Michael Jackson, Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid – and said there was a threat they all faced.
Speaking to The Sun, Simon – who now owns his own private security business and works as an actor – said the stars are constantly being bombarded with messages from their followers, who pursue them online, in stores and even on the red carpet.
“Fans don’t get too excited,” said Simon, 43. “What you get the most is the crazy fans, shoving, jostling, and a little bit of a hype when you see that person.
“With stalkers, though, sometimes there can be a real physical threat there, and that’s a pretty big thing that we’ve seen in the past, but it’s all related. to mental health.”
He continued: “Most celebs have had some sort of stalker, at some point in their lives, and it might not just be someone sitting outside of their house. surname.
“It could be someone on social media trolling them, and oftentimes they always think they are romantically connected to the celebrity, they think they went to school with them, or they think it is their girlfriend or boyfriend.”
Works for Michael Jackson
Simon, who lives in London, got his first famous job in 2006 when he was offered to be Michael Jackson’s bodyguard while he was in London for the World Music Awards.
After three years with the Royal Army Corps – one of the British Army’s combat support forces – serving in Canada and active duty in Iraq, he left the army to work in private security in 2016. 2003.
And three years later, he received an unexpected call, asking him to be a bodyguard for “a young man coming to London”.
At first, Simon turned down the job.
“I was visiting a friend in Edinburgh, and had four weeks off so I didn’t really want to work,” he laughs. “But then they called me back and brought the money up.”
He didn’t find out it was Michael Jackson until he was at the airport in London.
And, while many will take it seriously, working closely with MJ, Simon admits he “didn’t appreciate that work at all”.
“I’ve been working and doing that job for a long time, so it’s just another job.” he says. “I was more worried about losing my four-week vacation!”
Simon added: “He’s a bit reserved at times, but we don’t move him that much, because it’s always busy with all the fans.
“We just really moved him from the hotel to the scheduled meetings and back.”
120 hours a week
Simon’s previous work was not for the faint of heart and often required him to work 120 hours a week.
“We have to stay awake before they wake up, and can’t sleep until they fall asleep,” he explains, “That means, quite often, I can push out 16 or 17 hours a day.
“And it happens every day. You don’t take a day off until they leave the country or someone else takes over.”
Simon is currently working as an actor. He has appeared in the BBC drama Strike, and has two films in the making, but also owns his own private security business.
Traveled all over the world
He has traveled all over the world with his work, including to the United States, Kenya, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Maldives and South Africa.
And he believes part of the reason he’s so successful is because he doesn’t have a family.
“I have no children or dependents,” he confessed. “And a lot of the work I used to do, I got a phone call one night and I would get on a plane five hours later and sometimes won’t be back for three months!
“My job is what I love to do. I’ve missed weddings, funerals, birthdays, and canceled holidays.
“Not everyone was able to do it or was prepared to do it, which is fair enough, but that’s how I did it. Everything has been prioritized around my work.”
But he has no regrets.
He concluded: “I have traveled a lot, and have probably done all the work that I wanted to do in the private security industry.”
