First, she advised motorists to take out their insurance well in advance of actually needing it.

She described the 23-26 day period before you want to start your coverage as a “sweet spot.” The later you leave it, the more expensive it becomes.

If you have existing insurance coverage, always make sure to renew it well in advance of expiration, especially if you decide to switch providers or policies.

On that subject, Abigayle also recommended shopping around to get the best value for your money.

Comparison sites are a good way to get an idea of what’s on offer, although sometimes it’s cheaper to buy directly from the seller.

She added that other small changes to key details like your job title, driver’s name and where you choose to park can help bring the price down.

Just adding your driver’s license number can save you money.

Abigayle recalled, “It saved me £20 and it’s better to have £20 in your pocket than someone else’s.”

Likewise, by paying the total cost as a lump sum rather than in monthly installments, you could save hundreds in interest payments.

Companies can charge interest on monthly payments because they loaned you virtually the entire policy before you paid it. This can skyrocket your annual bill.

However, Abigayle recognized that paying for everything at once is “not possible for everyone”.

Finally, it’s always worth checking to see if anyone in your household has a policy that offers a multi-car discount.

Not all providers do this, but when it is offered it can offer great savings.

She also reminded viewers to always be honest and not withhold any information about her application as it could result in her insurance being cancelled.

Social media commenters loved the useful tips.

One wrote: “Great tip about driver’s license.”

Another added: “Wish I would have seen that a week ago.” [I] paid £550 last year, £750 this year.”
