Ian Wright lavishly praised Arsenal star Granit Xhaka after Brentford win despite once being his ‘most staunch critic’

And the three points helped Arsenal stay top of the table during the international break.

One of Arsenal’s best players this season was Xhaka.

He delivered a brilliant cross for Jesus’ goal against the Bees.

The 29-year-old Swiss star at one point in his Arsenal career looked like he would never recover after being stripped of his captaincy.

However, he has since found his footing and continues to be a leader in the team despite not being the full-time captain of Mikel Arteta’s side.

And one of his “most loyal critics”, Arsenal legend Wright, has paid tribute to his achievements.

Wright told BBC’s Match of the Day: “For me, Granit Xhaka is a player that we finally see playing like he does for Switzerland.

“He plays in a position that suits him, plays more offensively. He plays with real authority and confidence.

“Lately he’s been able to find space and from there he can be really dangerous because for me he’s one of the best left-footed players in the Premier League for sure.

“It’s a great cross for Jesus to score, it’s fantastic. He can do the defensive stuff too, he comes back and gets his foot in there.

“He set the pace for Arsenal from the ball.

“I’m very happy for him because I was one of his most outspoken critics. But now we’re seeing the best of Granit Xhaka.”

Fans also treated the midfielder to chants of “We have Granit Xhaka” as he neared the full-time away game.
