I was sexually abused at 12 by my brother’s best friend – he texted me a sick promise and made me keep ‘our little secret’

LORRAINE Smith considers her brother’s best friend Bradley Jones as part of her family.

Six years older than her, when she was growing up, he always came to her house and helped her with her homework.

But everything changed when she was 12, after Jones, now 24, sexually assaulted her while they were watching TV, opening an 18-month campaign of abuse.

Paedo Jones even confessed his love to her, telling her they would be together when she was “old enough”.

Lorraine, now 18 and a mother of one from Northamptonshire, told how Jones made her keep their “little secret” until he and his family moved out.

Finally free from his abuse, she had the courage to report Jones, and last June he was jailed after being found guilty of four counts of sexual assault.

But his meager sentence – just 25 months – made Lorraine and her family ill.

Now she bravely gives up her identity to expose Jones’ depraved abuse.

The full-time mother told The Sun: “Bradley is like one of the family. He practically lived with us.

“I considered him like a brother, but he betrayed me in the worst way possible.

“I’m glad he’s behind bars now but it wasn’t long enough.”

Jones has been best friends with Lorraine’s brother since the boys were five.

Most days he visits the family home, and Lorraine says he has become “a piece of furniture.”

“He used to help me with my homework and we enjoyed playing games together with the rest of my family,” she recalls.

“I love having him around and he always takes care of me at school.”

But one day, in August 2015, everything changed.

‘Surprised’

While her parents and brother were in the kitchen, Jones, then 17, asked Lorraine to sit next to him on the sofa.

There, he reached down her pants and sexually assaulted her.

She said: “Shocked, I asked him what he was doing, but he didn’t say a word and continued to touch me.”

Moments later, Lorraine’s brother shows up and summons them to dinner and Jones snatches his arm.

As the two entered the kitchen, Jones told Lorraine to keep quiet.

“I felt hurt and confused, and vowed to avoid Bradley ever since,” Lorraine said.

But the next week it happened again while Lorraine was watching TV.

She said: ‘Bradley appeared and grabbed my arm and pulled me to his side.

“He touched my jeans. This is terrible. I begged him to stop but he just started smirking.

“Then he said no one would believe me if I told him and it was ‘our little secret’.

“Everybody thinks his world, so I think he’s right and people will think I’m making it up.”

Months passed and Jones’ abuse continued. Whenever he visited Lorraine’s house, he would design a way for them to be alone.

One day he texted her: “I love you. We’ll be together when you’re old enough.”

Meanwhile Lorraine’s schoolwork suffers; she couldn’t concentrate on the lesson, afraid of what Jones would do with her next.

In December 2015, the night before she turned 13, Jones snuck into her bedroom.

She said: ‘I pretended to be asleep but he pulled back the blanket and climbed in beside me.

“I cried when he pointed his nose at me.”

‘Let’s laugh’

The next day, when Lorraine opened her birthday present, Jones came and gave her a £20 note.

She said: “I hate him but I have to thank him and put on a smile.”

During the next 18 months, Jones continued to abuse Lorraine.

Then, in the summer of 2017, Jones moved with his family.

Lorraine was finally free of her abuse. That’s when she realized she was groomed.

That Christmas, at the age of 14, she confessed to her family about the abuse. With their assistance, she reported Jones to the police and he was arrested.

“It’s not enough,” Lorraine said. I see Bradley as a brother, someone who would protect me, but he stole my childhood.

“Now that he’s behind bars, I’m trying to pick up the pieces of my life.

“I now have a partner and I am a mother, with another on the way.

“I won’t let Bradley ruin my future.”
