A South African man who was swapped at birth has revealed he resented his mother for not exchanging him back because he grew up poor while the other child was rich.
Robin was raised by Sandy Dawkins, a struggling single mother in the suburbs of Johannesburg, while Gavin was raised by her wealthier mother Megs Clinton Parker in Pietermaritzburg, after they moved together in 1989.
The flaw was discovered in 1991 after a dispute over Gavin’s paternity resulted in a DNA test showing that Megs was not his biological mother.
Later, an examination of hospital records revealed that Megs’ biological son, Robin, was indeed raised by Sandy.
But faced with the possibility of swapping their son back, Megs and Sandy opted instead to keep the kids they’ve raised since birth, reports 60 minutes Australia.
Robin has told how he wishes Megs had fought to swap him back, describing his meager life with Sandy as “not easy” and saying he wouldn’t want this ordeal to happen. with his “worst enemy”.
Speaking at the age of 15, Robin told the show he resented that Gavin “everything comes easy”.
“If I ever wanted anything, I had to work towards it, I never let it get to me,” he added.
Robin and Gavin were the only two children who were born at Nigel Hospital in Johannesburg one summer day in 1989 and were accidentally given the wrong mother by a nurse.
After discovering the bug in 1991 but deciding not to exchange the babies back, Sandy and Megs embraced like sisters.
Gavin at the time said that he was “happy” with the life he accidentally touched and that he didn’t feel sorry for Robin.
“To say I thank my lucky stars every day would be wrong but at the same time I have been given a life that I have now lived and I am still living and I do not regret anything, ” I said.
But Megs was missing her biological son, and in 2004 she encouraged him to move halfway across the country to her home with Gavin – leaving Sandy childless.
“I just wanted to know she was really happy with what she achieved,” Sandy said at the time.
“I mean she ruined everyone’s life, there’s no other way to look at it… she ruined mine in the first place.”
‘I AM NOT ONE’
Megs said she “could understand that” and would be “devastated” if the same thing happened to her, but added: “I’m not going to send him back because she’s in pain.
“I won’t regret it because I won. I’m glad I won.”
But the image of a happy family soon begins to crumble because of Robin’s attitude to the new school and Megs’ high expectations for him, turning the house into a “war zone”.
Robin said that the high pressure environment turned “me into a dragon”.
“That’s not who I am,” he said.
“It was like I was in a bottle and the cap was closed… For me to try to change in two, three years to fit Meg or to keep her happy, I tried. I tried and I thought I could, but I couldn’t.”
At 18, Robin dropped out of school and hit the road, moving to Louis Trichardt in northern South Africa, where he found work building safari rigs.
This move devastated Megs, tearing apart the already peaceful family.
“When he left, I almost died. I can’t tell how much it hurts, because I’ve worked so hard and I want it so much. Then when it failed, I never thought it failed,” she said.

“When you want all the right things for all the right reasons but they just don’t fit the place.
“When he was gone, I just stopped living for a while.”
Meanwhile Gavin said the sudden abandonment made him want to “kill” Robin.
“The fact that he hurt Megs. I mean she felt so betrayed and really hurt when he walked out,” he said.
“She has given him a home for three to four years, she is taking care of him, providing for him. And he walked out just throwing things back at us.”
Years later, the family has finally reunited with Robin, his wife Liesel, and their son James, and is beginning to rebuild their relationship.
And Robin now says he understands why Megs and Sandy chose not to swap the kids.
“If I find out he’s not mine, there’s no way I’ll give him back,” he said.
“I will make the decision that I will not get to know the other kid because what I have is good and keep it that way.
“I don’t want him to know, I’ll keep it a secret and let it be.”
