I was fined £155 for parking in my OWN driveway – my fine is divided

A DRIVER has been fined £155 after parking in his own driveway – but his punishment is sparking debate.

Angus Kelleher, from Sydney, Australia, parked his car outside his garage last week but a simple mistake meant he was breaking the law.

The radio producer’s Mazda CX-3 was parked in such a way that it blocked the path behind the vehicle.

Photos of the car show the rear wheels on the sidewalk in front of his property.

Angus went to a breakfast show on local radio, where presenter Ben Fordham questioned him why he didn’t just use his garage.

“It’s a really old garage, it doesn’t always work, there are tons of problems with it,” said Angus, defending his parking spot and claiming it didn’t cause any obstruction.

“Behind the path is a strip of paving; there is no obstacle,” he said, “people can move easily.

“I think a semi-trailer could get around that.”

In Sydney, road laws state that drivers are not allowed to stop on or over a driveway unless the driver is dropping off or picking up passengers, does not exit the vehicle and is gone within two minutes of stopping.

But although Angus was parked across from his own driveway, there are no exceptions to these rules unless it’s a police or ambulance vehicle.

The fine is £155 on a normal public footpath but can rise to £196 if the offense takes place in a school area.

This comes after a report that revealed a shocking number of drivers are not obeying a rule change introduced last year – and they could be slapped with a hefty £1,000 fine.

The Highway Code was updated in 2022 to include a new “hierarchy of road users” that gives pedestrians and cyclists priority over motorists.

A driver was also furious after being fined £70 for overnighting in an Asda car park just seconds later.

However, she claims it wasn’t her fault as her battery died when she returned to her car after shopping.

And an engine expert has revealed the little-known setting on your car that could help you avoid a hefty fine.
