I was enjoying a honeymoon swim in the infinity pool and disaster struck – I sustained horrible injuries

A newlywed bride was left with blood “pouring out of her head” after the infinity pool where she and her husband took a dip collapsed.

Jelizaveta and Gavin Jones, from Colindale, north London, were enjoying their luxurious £11,000 Caribbean honeymoon when they were suddenly washed out to sea when the structure gave way.

About 20 people were in the two-story ocean-view pool at the five-star Sandals Royal Curaçao hotel when the walls collapsed – at least 12 were injured.

Ms Jones, 29, required stitches after Thursday’s horror incident – less than 24 hours after she fled.

Other tourists also had to be taken to hospital after being washed ashore, while a woman was beaten unconscious after being hit by a plate.

Ms Jones, a sales manager who also goes by the name Elizabeth, told the Evening Standard: “It was awful, there was no warning.

“After being washed away, I staggered to my feet and limped with blood pouring from my head and leg – horrible. Every time I close my eyes I relive it.

“I couldn’t think, I couldn’t breathe. It all happened very quickly.

“I tried to surface to get some air but the current was too strong. I couldn’t do anything.”

Local media reports say police in the area believe one of the pool’s panels broke because too many people were in it during a party.

The leisure facility remains closed for repairs after the horror incident.

Bar and nightclub owner Mr Jones said he and his new wife were enjoying a few drinks when the disaster struck.

The 44-year-old said: “I was standing with my back to the sea talking to my wife when one of the tiles in the middle of the pool just disappeared.

“The weight of the water took me, Elizabeth and many other people and washed us about 30 meters down the beach.”

Mr Jones said he hit his head while Ms Jones was “dazed”.

He added: “Blood was pouring from her head.

“She suffered lacerations and needed stitches.”

The groom said the company told him “accidents happen” while offering credit towards a future stay.

A Sandals Resorts International spokesman said: “Fortunately, there were only a few guests in the pool at the time.

“Our resort team worked quickly to ensure everyone received immediate support and medical attention, including assessment by local medical professionals and treatment for any guest who required it.

“Sandals Resorts values nothing more than the safety of our guests and we remain in touch with affected guests should further assistance be required.”
