I was at Metaverse Fashion Week and it was like a dystopian nightmare – I fell off a yacht and had to leave

IT’S Metaverse Fashion Week and high-end brands like Estée Lauder, Tommy Hilfiger and Dolce & Gabbana are all there virtually.
The event is taking place in Decentraland’s virtual reality from March 24th to 27th and I was there to try out the first day.

Unfortunately for my avatar, things didn’t go exactly as planned.
Anyone can “get in” on Decentraland and you don’t even need a VR headset.
Creating an avatar on the site is completely free, but you’ll need a crypto wallet if you want to start buying any of the Metaverse fashion pieces.
Decentraland Foundation Creative Director Sam Hamilton said: “Fashion and haute couture is nothing new to the Metaverse.

“Since the launch of avatar wearables in 2020, Decentraland has pioneered rare and in-demand digital fashion.
“Since that time, developers have pushed both the technical and stylistic boundaries of Decentraland wearables, creating a booming economy with over $1 million in sales of Avatar wearables last year.”
My avatar went to the virtual fashion village and checked out the D&G runway and shop.
Maybe it was just the video game style graphics or the fact that it was night in the metaverse, but Fashion Village had a pretty spooky vibe to it.
At one point, three other people’s avatars literally stood in my virtual self as we all headed toward the same place at the same time.
I visited a luxury fashion house called Auroboros and saw a futuristic bodysuit that Grimes’ avatar will wear at the conclusion of the fashion event.
This virtual building had a spiral staircase that was the stuff of nightmares if you don’t like heights.
It featured Metaverse skins called things like “Replicant” and “Venustrap.”
When I visited the “luxury fashion yacht” it got even worse.
The interior of the boat itself is quite impressive, reminiscent of the Titanic’s grand style.
My problems arose when exiting the yacht through the virtual portal.
Somehow I got blown right into the Metaverse Sea and couldn’t get myself to shore no matter how hard I tried.
This may be due to my poor virtual coordination, not accidentally drowning my avatar.
Either way, I had to leave Metaverse Fashion Week earlier than planned after several failed rescue attempts.
The fashion event may seem far from reality, but Mark Zuckerberg believes that one day we will all live in the metaverse.
Zuckerberg told tech podcaster Lex Fridman, “A lot of people think the metaverse is about place, but one definition of it is that it’s about a time when fundamentally immersive digital worlds are becoming the primary way how we live our lives and spend our time. “
He added: “I think that’s a reasonable construct.”
Anyone who wants to see Grimes perform should head over to Decentraland this Sunday, March 27th.

The musical performance show runs from 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. UTC (6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET).
I would recommend being careful around the virtual water.
